Actually, this song reminds me of the South and old-fashioned (or stereotypical) Southern lifestyle. The gun toting, drinking, "whole box of rebel" as in rebel flag, bible & a rope. And it sounds like the man this song is about, is digging his own grave so-to-speak with his actions. Being reclusive and shady, along with what I mentioned above. But, this is just my interpretation. |

I think the reason Tom doesn't give an explanation for the song meanings is because maybe he wants his audience to identify with the songs in their own way. For him it is one way, for everyone else it is some other different experience in their lives, but we all can relate some how. Eh?! One reason why I love his music so much is because it's got feeling in it. Makes you feel like you are the person the song is about. You just feel like you are there. I love that. He paints a picture with every word he speaks. A true master of his craft. |

| This song makes me cry every time. If a song can do that to me, it is brilliant. This is what music/art is about. Being able to move someone and have them feel what the singer is feeling and I love Tom Waits because in such a short time he has managed to do this for me. He is an inspiration. | |
