i realize that this song is most likely referring to nature and finding oneself in it/appreciating it, but my first impression of the song was quite different. at first i thought 'giants in the ocean' referred to monsters. the song reminded me very much of a 'cloverfield' type movie, where someone is documenting their journey of survival/the attack of a monster. the verse 'mountains climbg and topple on themselves' makes me think that this is some kind of major disaster, where the Earth is being destroyed/practically destroying itself. 'forget your cell phone man, it won't work here' because the cell towers are out. 'my camera zooms - it captures all that might embrace it' makes me think of the video camera zooming in on the combination of monsters/disaster that is going on from afar. "oh darling I cant bare the thought of seperation. the years will pass and we'll forget just how this made us" makes me basically think of cloverfield, where the guy is looking for this girl the entire time and he doesn't want to be separated. the second line makes me think that eventually this will pass, and they will try to forget about it so life can return to normal. 'there is substance in this silence, the proof of what surrounds us.' being that theyre on a ship, i picture a ship hall filled with people, the ship bringing them away from the disaster and to safety. but everyone is quiet, as no one wants to say anything. the silence proves what's going on around them. 'seasickness, ancient forests, and water creatures keep us from thinking about home' makes me think that they're too distracted by the current events and surviving to think about home. that was just what i first thought when i heard the song. |

i think the "drowning in the lake, i only left her for a couple of seconds" part refers to a guy not paying attention to his girlfriend or neglecting her. she ends up "drowning," which either refers fireclty to her leaving, or to her becoming drowned emotionally or something. either way, she ends up leaving him and he obviously regrets it, and the rest of the song is pretty self explanatory. he seems to be justifying with himself like "i only left her for a little bit. how did this happen?" |

i think murmermer has a good point though. though all this may not be about obama, it could definitely be argued that way. i think with the nobel prize thing, they werent actually predicting him to get a nobel prize. to me it sounds more sarcastic, like "oh hey this guy is so good at nothing, lets give him an award!" and he just ended up actually winning a nobel prize. just my opinion.
and i feel the ending is sarcastic as well. i feel like "i'm down with brown town" is meant to mock obama, and theyre like yeah im TOTALLY cool with him. then the "it's only seconds away" could possibly be referring to before he was elected, and they know everyone is gonna vote for him. so theyre sarcastically like yeah im down with obama. he's gonna be elected soon anyway. it's coming up.

during the chorus, possibly the "Oh, pain. A rememdy that can erase your sting." part means that he is putting himself through some kind of pain (drugs?) to try and erase the sting. Trading one kind of pain for the other. It would make sense as some kind of drug, because after this pain he has put himself through he 'feels painless' |

I think that the constant use of 'you' makes who its referring abstract because its too general. because i think its referring to a girl, and some form of drug or alcohol. it very obviously sounds like a song about a girl, but they 'pick up some happiness' in alleyways and when he says "I guess I still miss you. Oh well, its me and you." I feel like the second you refers to some kind of substance |
