which is odd, considering the next song on this album is "Try Not To Breathe". |

Fun song...
Especially when your bass player wants to sing a song and you, the lead singer talk him into singing a cover of this song, no rehearsal, and you let scores of people laugh (and cry), as he passes out from exhaustion after "Ladder start to clatter with fear fight down height". Good times...good times... |

I'm a teacher candidate bound to start teaching in 2012 at an inner city school, and this song always makes me think of how few inner-city students actually graduate...let alone go to college. It has a strong message about how the only ones who succeed are the ones who break the stereotypes and molds, and become great people in their own right...especially now, when you need a degree in business to straighten up toilet paper at Target...
Those who break the mold end up successful, and those who work hard end up happy. There are great opportunities out there, BUT only if you grab the bull by the horns and pull! |

I see it as a combination of drug abuse, withdrawal, and self-mutilation. Considering BOC went through a dark phase around this song's release, it would make sense that they were trying to cram all of the darkest essences of the human condition into one song. |

Well, I would imagine that, coming from a band like R.E.M., that it refers to the idea of losing one's place in the limelight, as all bands eventually do. The fact is, Michael Stipe wanted to keep putting out hits like Man On The Moon and The One I Love, but due to creative differences between conflicting sides of his artistic background (and foreground), the best he could come up with was something like this: new, vibrant, yet labeled with an old name. People get tired of hearing old band names, so no matter how hard an artist tries, they just can't emulate the power of their first hit single (nor the innocence of their first record). |
