This reminds me of a recent relationship of mine with a girl. I think it's about meeting a girl that's perfect for him, or so he thinks. For 2 months they tell each other "everything truthfully." But, at the end of those two months of "peacefulness," she turns away from him, and yes, he knows that's like her and all, but he knows he shouldn't put up with it. So, he believes she's fighting him, changing, so, he tries to trace her desires to the source, to figure her out, but when he figures it out, he realizes she's not all that she seemed. She wanted "rock and roll and complete control," and "friends with pools." I think meaning she's all about those physical aspects that she can see. Vampire Weekend is about being popular and preppy, but having a deeper side to them, thinking things out, and knowing people, and the fact that this girl isn't, fits right in with them. He calls her a Contra, and knows she is, but she tries to call him a Contra also, but he tells her not to, claiming she has no clue what she's talking about. He moves on from his love, though seemingly fine. This is the point--he's not sad. He's glad. She was fighting him, so he doesn't want her. Beautifully epic song. |
