Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – The Last Page Lyrics 15 years ago
i agree with people who say its about mourning. its difficult to heal from something so painful like a death of a loved one, especially if you are also dealing with the shock of them being gone. you can only think about wanting to be near them but you know you have to move on-- most people have to take "baby steps" when they are trying to heal. so she just moves "through the weeks" to try to heal, and keeps saying that she's "on her way" to moving on.

when she says death is safe, i think shes just trying to remind herself that death isn't the most terrible thing, it's just something that happens-- i think she is trying to have this viewpoint to help her heal from a death she'd otherwise never recover from.

Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – Reading in Bed Lyrics 15 years ago
my boyfriend writes a lot of music, and tends to use a lot of movie/book/musical references to help influence or inspire a song. I can understand what she is talking about-- sometimes you are hit with something you read/watch/hear so hard, you empathize so much with it that you want to write about it yourself.
Even if she hasn't literally dealt with some of the stuff she writes about, some of the things she reads in bed are like another part of her and have an effect on her writing.

That's how I see it, at least.

Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – The Lottery Lyrics 15 years ago
i love the feminism references she makes. i think this song has a lot to say about waiting for somebody that's worth it, as opposed to flaunting and selling any and every ounce of sexuality you have in you just to get some attention from a false love.

i think a lot of females settle for less because they are afraid that they won't find the "perfect one". when she talks to "heather" about forever, i think she's saying that when you are looking for love you can't be worried about things like that, because in the end you never know, and it's all kind of a game of chance that everyone has to play.

i love the last part of the song where she talks about the desperation that girls go through to find love wherever they can being "pathetic" and "impossible", and much like girls in stilettos, who are painfully and desperately trying.

Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – The Maid Needs a Maid Lyrics 15 years ago
i believe this is about double standards. guys put each other first, "hoes" are below them in a kind of way, and that males have the right to a maid to tell clean them, feed them, and be their stereotypical "housewives".

when she talks about how "you wouldn't need a real job/i'd love to pay for you", she's basically saying she wants a "housewife" to do all the same things to her, too.
