Actually it was Ouranos who lost his genitals; the myth goes that Gaia (Earth) and Uranos (Sky) were locked in such a tight and passionate embrace that their offspring couldn't leave Gaia's womb. So Gaia conceives a sickle and Ouranos' first born son -Cronos- uses it to chop off his dad's dick. Dick falls into sea and creates Aphrodite, Chronos after hearing a prophecy that one of his children (borne from his sister and now wife rhea) would dethrone him, decides to swallow them all, except Zeus who rhea swaps with a rock in a blanket. Zeus kills Chronos and liberates his brothers and sisters: amongst them Hades and Poseidon they divide the world and Poseidon gets the sea, Zeus the sky and Hades the underworld. Hades is understandably bummed out... |
