| Múm – Sing Along Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I think it's about conformity to one's wishes. Maybe in a parent-child relationship, maybe in a lover-lover relationship... maybe even friend-friend. The dominant partner in whichever relationship wishes for the submissive partner to submit to them and what they want out of that person, but maybe doesn't make it apparent, like in most relationships. It's hard to tell what others want without being told, so the dominant partner is making the submissive partner "sing along to songs they don't know." Which is difficult because they don't know what's expected. But despite that confusion, the dominant partner wants to keep the other as their own; "lock them in their house," "keep them as their guest," "feed them with their spoon." They want the partner to become their perfect little person. That's what I think anyway! :D | |
| The Dresden Dolls – Me and the Minibar Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Yaaaay, this is my first time interpreting a song without having prior knowledge of what everyone else had to think by reading everything everyone else wrote :D And I think weird! Yay! So please be gentle with me. XD Hrm! Well. When I hear this song and read the lyrics so I can better understand what she is singing... I think that the main character (of the song) had a romantic night planned this evening she sings about... likely for an anniversary, because she’s singing “happy birthday us” at the end. But she is devastated to find that the lover in question is... either, dead, or has left her with little to say. If he is dead, I imagine suicide. And here’s my story to go with it! :D “Bring two prix fixe dinners up I'll unwrap the plastic cups It's just us my love It's just us my love” -I honestly have no idea what “prix fixe” means, I thought it said “pre-fixed...” But maybe it means the same thing. I do not know. Regardless, she is describing how they were going to have themselves the evening together. “I will make the room up nice Put your insides all on ice It was real true love It was real true love” -She spent some time making the house look nice; especially the bedroom. I imagine the main character’s relationship with this person was loving and affectionate, and they were going to have a night together to celebrate an anniversary... ‘Put your insides all on ice’ to me says that the night would dazzle them both so much that they would pour their hearts out to one another. Something like that... and then also, for some reason, had the man committed suicide... I imagine the ‘insides on ice’ would also be his heart, but in the form of a goodbye note. Well-written, lengthy... Apologetic but explaining why he did it. And that reason, I don’t know. But, the letter was something she saved, as you would save an organ by freezing it. ‘It was real true love’ is her emphasizing that it was a true relationship, pure love, nothing less. “Close all the windows Put signs on the handles And strip down to my dun-dun-duns You have gone so far You have gone so far And tonight Its just me and the minibar” -She goes on to further explain the evening’s plans, about how they were going to have their evening undisturbed, and she was down to her ‘dun-dun-duns...’ as in, yes, she was likely naked, or almost there. Lingerie maybe. To help the sort of ‘sexy’ mood. His going so far is how long he’s lasted... In terms of his suicide, perhaps, how long he’s lasted before it all “was too much for him” and he decided death was his only out. Otherwise, if he simply left her, it is how he came so far with their relationship, and maybe she’s even saying that he’s gone so far in “dealing” with her in the relationship. And so, with him gone one way or another, it is just her and the minibar they likely have somewhere in their apartment, or home, or wherever they are. Maybe even a hotel, take your pick. “Candles from the walmart that Every city's got to have That I bought last night That I bought last night I was so excited to Do such normal things with you When you left last night With your toothbrush dry” -More explanation of the evening. Candles, also to help the mood. She bought them in mind of the evening, and she also even goes on to explain that she was excited. She was likely anticipating this night for a while, which helps stress how devastated she is now that he is gone, and they couldn’t even spend this evening together before he left. And she was excited to do “normal things,” perhaps, more simplistic things with him, relationshipwise? Perhaps they do a lot of silly things together, but not it’s nice to just eat dinner together, and end the evening beside one another in the bedroom, like “normal” people. Doing “normal” things. And he left, with his toothbrush dry... a phrase I’m not entirely certain about, but maybe it’s just he left in a hurry... with little real thought put into the decision. Also can apply to whether it was suicide or just walking out. “No such details will spoil my plan That is the kind of girl I am HA HA HA” -She is merely telling us that she is strong... or trying to be. This is her trying to convince herself that she’s strong enough to move through this loss, to me. She’s telling herself to just finish the evening herself, just eat dinner and mosey off to bed... “HA HA HA” is her trying to make it easier for herself by laughing it off a bit... though it’s a helpless sort of attempt, I think, since it’s laughing, at a time like this. “Can you hear room 318? Man they're really happening They're a wild bunch They're a wild bunch But if they just knew What my night was coming to God would they vomit and run You have gone so far You have gone too far” -She hears a separate room, which leads me to believe this is likely in a hotel. And she hears them having their fancy evening together, and maybe she’s even a bit jealous that they get to have their fun and she doesn’t because her love is now gone. Her issues this evening are what would make them vomit and run, as people typically don’t like dealing with these sorts of problems, especially if the problems aren’t even theirs to have. Again she mentions his going so far, but now she’s starting to feel angry and tells him he’s gone TOO far... Whether leaving her or committing his suicide, she feels it was totally unnecessary and starts to feel more angry than devastated that he is no longer there. “So tonight It's just me and the minibar Nobody else And I sing at the top of my lungs Happy birthday us Happy birthday us...” -Further emphasizing her loneliness, she sings that she is alone with the minibar again. Nobody else. And in a fit of overwhelmed solitude, she sings “happy birthday us,” or, “happy anniversary,” to her and her lover. Regardless of if he is there or not. And that. Is. That! I hope it wasn’t so long that you died ): But there’s my input ;D I hope you enjoyed reading, if you managed to read it all :) Thank you! Now off to read what everyone else had to say. =D |

| The Dresden Dolls – Colorblind Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think a lot of people are spot on, but I don't think it's necessarily that the guy only loves her for... aherm. Nightly relations. I honestly think it's just a simple realization that he's not what she wants in a person... Someone can be "dumb and colorblind" to a person's true colors (lol, puns are great) for a long time before they realize... no. They aren't the prince or princess charming they are seeking. I think this song is the epiphany that this person she's singing about is not all he was cracked up to be. “I love you like a brother and I love you like a child and I love you like a lover and I love you dumb and colorblind and I love you like a mother even after all you've done” -This is the main character’s love for this person. When I first heard this song, I imagined that the person she is singing about had many problems and issues... and so, like a mother, like a sister, she took care of him... nurtured him in his times of need... and like a lover gave him hope for a better tomorrow. Even after all the stupid shit he’d done, she’d still try her hardest to make him feel better. “and I love you like no other but I know you’re not the one...” -She loves him, and she loves him a lot. But she is beginning to realize that he is not what she needs in a lover. “and I loved you in bright orange and in violet and in green and I loved you in such colors as your eyes have never ever seen” -I saw that someone pointed out the focus on secondary colors, and find it interesting, but haven’t the foggiest idea what it translates to in the story... Oh well. Perhaps someone well figure it out? Anyway, this is the singer using color as a metaphor for how she loved him. Hrm... perhaps now the secondary colors could mean that she loved him extremely so, because to make these colors, you must put other colors together, thus instead of just three colors, orange, violet and green, she really loves him in six colors, which adds the three used to make the aforementioned colors. I think this is just how she loved him so much, in colors he’s never known before; in other words, with love he’s never felt before. “and I loved the way you acted but your one trick pony's dead and I loved you unprotected but you only love in red” -His one trick pony was the way that he acted. With his issues and problems, he acted helpless. It made her feel sorry for him and she fell for him, feeling like a protectress for him. Also, angry because of all his troubles, and in need of someone to help him. And she loved him “unprotected.” As in, she went out on a limb in order to love him... she sacrificed herself to his rage and frustration just to love him and help him. But, it was this very thing that made her realize that he’s not right for her: she would sacrifice herself. And constantly. Just for his sake, and to make him feel better... and it was no way to have a relationship, she thought. And he only loved in red; meaning, the only way he ever saw her was as an escape. Not a lover. Not at all. “I know it’s dark for good I never listen when I should you only see in black and white so go on back to your own kind and I'll go back to mine” -She knows “it’s dark for good.” It is always “dark” in his mind, because he only sees in black and white. He cannot “see” in colors, so it is only darkness and shades in his eyes. Her never listening when she should is likely how she was often told that he’s not right for her, but she didn’t want to believe them. And now she regrets not listening. “Go on back to your own kind and I’ll go back to mine” is her telling him to bug off, basically. She wants him to go back to all his troubles and she will go back to her nice life before he came along to ruin her fun. “I love you like a brother and I love you like a child and I love you like a lover and I love you dumb and colorblind and I love you like a mother even after all you've done and I love you like no other but I know you’re not the one...” -Repetition of the first verse to bring it back down from the louder singing. The volume fluctuation in this song makes me think of it as an argument, how it starts quiet, and gets louder and angrier, and now it’s back to being soft spoken. Around the middle, right after the screaming of “red” over and over is the height of her argument with him, where she’s telling him all of his flaws, and the reasons why she’s through with him. And now her getting quiet is her dramatic sort of apology, bringing it full circle... About how she loved him, and how yes, she helped him through a lot, but his issues are not hers, and if all she is to him is a place to go, then no. She will not bother with him, and she is done with him and his antics. YAY, LONG COMMENT. Just my thoughts :) I hope they were worth reading! ^^ |

I honestly don't see what all the hubbub is about the song, I always saw it as a kind of cute apology, not sarcasm and rudeness. I thought it was just a cutesy sort of apology from band to fan. "We're so sorry! It's been too long! We've got more songs for you! And don't you worry because we haven't changed a bit!" And I really don't see the huge difference between the albums, I really don't :\ |

| Panic! at the Disco – Northern Downpour Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I'd not taken the time to read everyone's interpretations yet, there are so many XD And many of them are quite long! But I just wanted to share what I personally thought this song was about, and perhaps work out whatever lyrics I do not yet quite know what they make me think of. Overall, I think this is a song for someone else who was having a problem. I make songs romantic a lot, forgive me...I also tend to take songs and apply them to certain situations and people I know, and that is forever what the song just IS to me XD But... I always saw him singing to a girl he loved, who was the moon in this song, and was having a pretty bad time in her life. "If all our life is but a dream Fantastic posing greed Then we should feed our jewelry to the sea For diamonds do appear to be Just like broken glass to me" Telling his dear friend that all that glitters is not gold. She doesn't need fancy things and nice knicknacks in order to be happy, because he's happy with her, and stupid jewels are no more valuable than broken glass in his eyes. "And then she said she cant believe Genius only comes along in storms of fabled foreign tongues Tripping eyes and flooded lungs Northern downpour sends its love" I'm not entirely sure what's going on. This is one of those parts I didn't know precisely what to make of it, symbolically XD But I'd always seen "northern downpour sends its love" as him, he is the downpour, and he sends his love to her. Perhaps something happened to her and it made her feel very stupid: "genius only comes along in storms of fabled foreign tongues." "Tripping eyes and flooded lungs" was her situation; her eyes "tripped" because of her curiosity about things, and her flooded lungs was... ah! Her gasp! :) So something had happened, a sort of realization or epiphany about something that had involved her... and she wasn't very happy. And when he heard about this, he felt so bad for her... "northern downpour sends its love." "Hey moon, please forget to fall down Hey moon, don't you go down Sugarcane in the easy morning Weathervanes my one and lonely" He's asking that she does not let this get her down, they will work it out... things will see the light. His asking the moon to forget to fall down is a cutesy way for him to tell it to just not fall down at all. The moon falling would be most devastating indeed, as would his love's "falling" into depression. I think the thing about the sugarcanes and weathervanes is just his describing a nice little place, a sort of sanctuary that they both have. A place, then. “The ink is running toward the page It’s chasing off the days Look back at both feet and that winding knee I missed your skin when you were east You clicked your heels and wished for me” The situation is getting worse… but only in her head. The ink running toward the page seems to me like a sort of panicky situation. I would flip out if ink was getting on my page too! XD But anyway, in her mind, the situation’s starting to sound worse and worse as she turns over the thoughts of it in her head. And he tells her, “look back at both feet and that winding knee.” She’s getting really worked up over this. “I missed your skin when you were east,” he says, telling her, he misses when she used to be so carefree and didn’t have to worry about these things. “You clicked your heels and wished for me.” There were times like these before… she panics a lot. Every time something bad would happen, he was always there. She’d always wish he was there to make things better, and he never failed to help her when she needed it. And he’s telling her that he’s still there, and he’s going to help her. “Through playful lips made of yarn That fragile Capricorn Unraveled words like moths upon old scarves I know the world’s a broken bone But melt your headaches call it home” He’s kind of describing her now. “Through playful lips made of yarn” is his way of describing her. She’s obviously usually a playful person. But she’s still fragile. I think Capricorn actually is just her sign, I don’t think there’s much behind that, personally. And she’s telling him everything, just breaking down. She “unraveled words like moths upon old scarves.” And he tells her that he knows how screwed up the world is… It’s “a broken bone.” But it’s home. And there’s nowhere else really, that she can go. Her headaches, in other words, her troubles need not be so troublesome. And the song goes on to repeat old lines, which is all of his reassurance to her that everything is going to be okay… he’s gotten her out of her panic and fear, and he’s making her feel better. But at the very end we hear something new: “Hey moon, please forget to fall down Hey moon, don't you go down You are at the top of my lungs Drawn to the ones who never yawn” He’s telling her for a final time, not to fall down, and don’t worry about it… And her name is at the top of his lungs; basically, she is one of his most precious things in life. She’s on the top of his mind. And she’s “drawn to the ones who never yawn…” Hrm, another line I hadn’t quite deciphered. I think it means, following the rest of the song, maybe just the sort of people she’s attracted to. People who “never yawn” I would guess would be the adventurous type, and not very boring. So all in all, she, who is drawn to the adventurous, never-fear-for-I-am-here kind of guy, is on the top of his adventurous mind. And that, my friends, is what I think XD Thanks for reading! Toodle-oo! |

Just what I think, I haven't gone through everyone's comments yet... But I think this song is, overall, about a couple, the singer and some girl, who had... *ahem* nightly relations, and her father is not very happy. Who's to say whether the two truly love each other or not, but me and my fairytale mind, I like to think they do :) "Allow me to exaggerate a memory or two" may be him talking after they are happily married, or somewhere close, and he's recalling the incident, and telling the listener about what happened. "Where summers lasted longer than, longer than we do" is just simply, it happened in a summer of their relationship. "Where nothing really mattered except for me to be with you. But in time we all forgot, and we all grew" I think is how then, it seemed so impossible for them to be together and be in love, because her father hated him for whatever reason, or just didn't want him to be his daughter's lover. And as they grew up, differences were put aside and her father didn't mind as much. "Your melody sounds as sweet as the first time it was sung, with a little bit more character for show" is how perhaps, they had been having their relations a lot, but at first it was just for the sake of doing it, and be "cool kids" or something like that by being able to say they've had it before. But over time it started to become more and more romantic, and less and less because of peer pressure by friends and whatnot. "And by the time your father's heard of all the wrong you've done, then I'm putting out the lantern, find your own way back home" is simply, he's going to have to leave her side before morning, and her dad comes to wake her up, because if he's still there, there's gonna be some problems. So he has to leave before her dad comes in the morning, bids her goodnight, turns out whatever lights and gets the heck out of there. "If I've forgotten how to sing before I sung this song, I'll write it all across the wall before my job is done. And I'll even have the courtesy of admitting I was wrong, as the final words before I'm dead and gone" perhaps how much he truly does love her, despite what people may think of them having relations at a young age, since he'll go through the trouble of writing all the lyrics for her, if he can't sing them. And maybe he will admit he was wrong about... hrmm... I'm not sure, myself. Perhaps an argument they had, or admitting maybe they were wrong about trying to "fit in" with their friends by doing the deed. And when he says they'll be his final words before he's dead, is simply his saying "before her dad kills me... |:" "You've never been so divine in accepting your defeat, and I've never been more scared to be alone" could be when they are together at night, perhaps she was the one who didn't know if it was a good idea for them to be doing what they were doing, but she admitted defeat because she loved him and knew he loved her. And he's never been so scared to be alone, because he loves her... he doesn't want to lose her. "If love is not enough to put my enemies to sleep, then I'm putting out the lantern, find your own way back home" is him saying that if their making love won't shut his friends up, and stop them from saying things like "man, you two haven't done it yet? You're lame!" or some teenage boy equivalent of such a statement, then he's just gonna say "screw it" and leave them to be in their lameness. At least, that's all of what I see. |

| The Dresden Dolls – Modern Moonlight Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I must agree with everyone when they say this song is about how we're being really stupid with technology right now. I just noticed a few things a while ago and figured I'd post about it :) "Presenting modern moonlight just as advertised Coke and Pepsi finally found a compromise How can they complain that we're all fucked up kids? When they keep on changing who our mother is?" I think the first line includes "just as advertised" to emphasize how today's age has so much advertisement and even false advertisement for everything under the sun. From the most necessary item to something you seriously will never use, but advertisement fools you into buying everything. In the last two lines there, she asks how can they complain about us when they keep changing who our mother is. I saw "mother" being mother earth, and how quickly it's changing in our time. It's changing so rapidly, technologically and everything else: environmentally, politically, socially... And with advancements in everything we have and so quickly, I think she's saying "how can they complain when they're the ones changing our environment so quickly and giving us all kinds of new things to be so stupid with?" Just my thoughts :) Thought I would add to all the wonderful interpretations here. |

I'm with InkBleedsDeeper and evolutionaried's comments but like loverly23, I've nothing to add ^^; Such a strange song, to me. I honestly had no idea what on earth to think of it before I came here, giving up on trying to figure it out myself. Beautiful piece, though. I wish there were more comments on this one :P I'd love to see the epiphanies people get for this song. |
