I think the second verse might be talking about how he verbally abused his wife/girlfriend, and maybe it had some part in her death (suicide or just incidentally). "But sometimes the words I used were as hard as my fist She had the strength of a man and the heart of a child I guess" and i think hes trying to make himself feel a little better by telling himself that at least he didnt hit her "My hands are as good to me as they've ever been And I ain't ashamed of anything my hands ever did" |

| Drive-By Truckers – Lisa's Birthday Lyrics | 16 years ago |

To me this song is about the contrast between the speaker and Lisa, who might be his wife. In the town I'm from its pretty normal that people go to the local bar and get drunk and make a fool of yourself in general; the last one I bothered going to, the girl whos birthday we were celebrating was, by the end of the night, a mess and being taken advantage of men. And this will likely happen every year for those people, and that seems a sad life to me. The speaker always knows when its lisas birthday when she phones him: "It's always Lisa's birthday when I get that call Her car's not where she parked it it's with her wallet and her phone" I think the speaker shares my view on the birthday at the bar. |

at first i thought it was about a guy who others viewed as a little odd, but he was the only one that was truly happy. but now that you mention it being gay does make sense too, sortof a looks can be decieving kinds story. |

| Drive-By Truckers – The Purgatory Line Lyrics | 16 years ago |

my first impression of this song is that its about a woman who killed herself after the death of her lover. and shes in this huge blank space (imagine an endless white room), all alone. She doesn't know what shes doing here, but she thinks it must be purgatory, and shes waiting till she can get into heaven to reunite with her lost love. but at the same time she's wondering if this is all there really is after death; she's scared but she keeps on waiting in that purgatory line. thats probably way off but thats what my first impression was. |
