The KKK costumes were actually pennitent robes. In old Catholic doctrine, during lent sinners would march in procession with these robes on to repent, but their faces were covered so you wouldnt know who was marching. They would also carry large icons of saints, a lot like the picture of Ian they carry in the video. The KKK stole the idea for their get up from the penitents of the Catholic Church. |

This song, simply put, is about finding that perfect someone who completes you and who is always there for you. Its about true love, in a word. And Nico's voice is haunting on this one. |

This song is absolutely about control and domination, and finding pleasure in that sort of dysfunctional relationship. Not necessarily BDSM or sexual gratification, but about people who need to be in relationships with abusive domineering or overpowering partners. Deeply psychological. |

This song is self explanitory, but very very real. SHes your girl, she says things that you like, things that you hate, but do you believe her when she says those three most important words?? |

Definitely Danish. I met these guys after a show at the Rock n Roll Hotel in DC. Great chaps. Theyre obsessed with late 50's beat culture, drive in movies, & garage rock. (They covered 100% by Sonic Youth, my fav!)
This song gives the feeling of one of those old movies, (the same feeling Tarantino tries with varied success to capture) where youre on the run and the world is against you and your just trying to get away and live your own life, damnit! |

This song is about a person in a relationship with somebody they don't love. To make things worse, the person they aren't in love with loves them very much. This song is exactly the story of my last relationship. Oh Sune & Sharon, you tell the story of my life so well. And we only met that once after the show in DC... Meh. |

This is hands down my favorite Devils song. Not only does it oh so perfectly captures what it is to be in a Rock N Roll band (along with a number of their other songs too..), but there is also a love story implicit too, between the singer and his girl. He just wants to take her home, because she looks so good, but first hes got a job to do, he's gotta get 'em moving. Its beautiful... i can actually visualize the girl with her dress on, shakin' and movin'... wow. MCD has always been big on dancing and thrashing around and having a good time at a rock show. Like youre supposed to. |

This might be my favorite Devils song. Its really simple and to the point. Sometimes you can capture all the feeling and energy of a Rock show in a single picture, if you get it at just the right time and place. This is also why the Devils try and make sure that anytime they play a show the crowd is allowed to bring cameras and recording devices into the venue. |

This song is brilliant because its god- damned true. Inside each of us is a secret account sheet where we keep track of the wrongs we have done in our life, on purpose or by accident. Sometimes it even keeps me up at night... |

| Murder City Devils – Dear Hearts Lyrics

This is another fantastic song, an anthem for all the misunderstood, no- account, misfits. The 1%ers, the freaks and wierdos. People who choose to live life by their own rules, not by what society says they should be and should do. Its a recurring theme in Spencers lyrics.
"Rejoice, we made the right choice
If there's something wrong
You know they'll find it
Well I say let'em have it,
Let 'em have it"
Be who you are, regardless of what others think. If youre different, someone will notice and point it out. Spencer says "who gives a shit, let em have it."

| Murder City Devils – Bear Away Lyrics
|
|
This song is NOT about Vampires. Thats just stupid. Spencer uses the Vesta and alludes to the Dracula story as a parable. Dracula was evil, but he was true to his own nature. The song is really about the underground, misfits, 1%ers, no- accounts, and freaks (or whatever you call 'em). Its about people who live lives by their own rules, regardless of societies opinions and notions. Bear away means that we (the people on the boat) steer clear of and shun society, popular culture and all things considered "normal" by societies' standards. Its a choice. We make it every day. |

No need to go into the meaning... its self evident. Unfortunately, this song is a parable of EVERY relationship i have ever had...

Everyone has had this girl/ guy in their past. The 'one that got away'. No matter what happened between you, you will ALWAYS remember them. the 1st line of the song is like, my motto.
"I heard or read
The only love is
Lost love
Well if it's true then
People like me and you
We get our share of love"
Oh too true.

| Murder City Devils – Rum to Whiskey Lyrics

|
I dont think the song is about anyone ACTUALLY getting shot or murdered, it think the "bang- bang" bit is symbolic (plus i've also seen it written 'And then', as in "and then he put her down") But whatever, im not here to argue the lyrics.
The song is definately about a guy who loses this great girl and really regrets it. He switches from rum to whiskey because when your trying to get drunk, Whiskey gets the job done. The whole "rum to whiskey" thing is to sort of let you know that the situation got bad. |

| Murder City Devils – Lemuria Rising Lyrics

This song is really underrated, and its meaning pretty cryptic. Psicofreak makes a lot of good points. I would also add that Virginia Wolfe & Kenneth anger were two very contravercial figures who also did things their own way.
On a personal note, i love this song because i was that kid, crying over my homework, who would've slit my wrists if it wasnt for Rock n Roll. Fucking Brilliant. |

This song is an anthem for anybody who's ever been in a band on the road, playing show after show all over the place, before you get really too big or full of yourselves. I think it captures the spirit of what it is to really live a Rock n Roll lifestyle, not like what you see from TV or movies. |

Breakinglass139 is right re: the pressgang, i would only add that if later you tried to run away from the Navy, well then you would get hanged for desertion.
This song has special meaning for me... I had a friend (Sgt Scott Kirkpatrick, KIA, also 1999 Slam Poetry National Champion) who joined the army in '04 because he wanted to go fight in Afganistan. He was tired of "Dreaming his life away" and wanted to "Make it on his own" This was his favorite devils song. He was taken in by all the pomp and hype in the media and in the ad campaigns on TV and everywhere else for the Army. After his 1st tour in Iraq, (where he never wanted to go and didnt know why he was there) he expressed to me some of his reservations about the Army, their mission and the things he was being asked to do. 2 months later he shipped out for his second tour in Iraq, where he was killed by a suicide bombers' booby trap. Such a fucking waste... "He was a good man, he was a young man. He was like you, he was like me." |

This song is about not being able to find any dancin' music on the radio (duh). I can fully understand, the radio is anathema to anyone who is interested in really good music, and not ephemeral top 40 shyte. More than that though, like "Get Off the Floor", MCD is going on about all these shitheads at a concert who stand around trying to look cooler than one another and giving attitude to anyone who wants to dance or thrash around. |

There's definately a serious nod to the Beat culture here, so fed up and bored with the straight- laced mainstream that they're almost ready to tear everything down just to start with something fresh and new and pure. Going to Beat City is going to where all the cool, hip and "in the know" people are. "Martini's are for squares, daddy-oh". |

| The Raveonettes – Attack of the Ghost Riders Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
I'm pretty sure this song has nothing to do with Ghostrider, the motorcycle hero. The band "Suicide" does a song about him, that Henry Rollins covered on the Crow soundtrack.
I can't say which one, but this song is about one of those old 50's drive- in motorcycle gang movies. Personally, this song reminds me of being on the road, crossing the country, and being haunted by the shades of "Hollywood" biker gangs like in "The Wild One", and every little dusty rest stop or diner or motel you stop in conjures the feelings engendered by these films. Silver screen threats that never were. |

This song is about two individuals in an obviously dysfunctional relationship, but theyre both damaged in a way that makes them perfect for each other. One of those "make- up break- up" couples. I think this song is about young, foolish and ephemeral love. How real and intense love feels like when youre still really young, when it can be overwhelming for a person. I'm reminded of overpriveliged kids in the suburbs, giving their high-school sweethearts Tiffany bracelets and crushing up their meds to snort them. Maybe thats not what the song is ACTUALLY about, but i've known too many kids like that to think about anything else when i hear it. |

| The Raveonettes – Love in a Trashcan Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
This song is about trying to find a meaningful relationship while on the road in the sordid and transient world of clubs, bars and the music scene. Its an updated "Looking for love in all the wrong places". I read this in an interview with Sune fr Details magazine. Or maybe Rolling STone, i can't remember.
Personally, i think it also means that you should'nt believe everything you hear about people in the scene. Someone might have a bad rep, but she might still "fit right into my life". |
