I like Visiontrick's ideas, and think that we can agree it's about someone who falls in love with a magnetic person, pretty suddenly. Also before i start let me just add that this song was stuck in my head for like 3 years straight, a few years ago and I still love it, I just feel like I am no longer stuck on the preverbial puzzle quite so much now lol. Point being I've given it a lot of personal thought.. Ultimately it is kind of simple.( & luckily.) The song starts with him thinking it's the same old love story, but the stars go backwards because she "must have pissed them off.".. So already he's like "Woah! What is happening. This is different." Then it goes right into the "I've been searching from the bottom to the top" Chorus line.. which we don't get right away... The middle part he says, anyone would go mad, or do anything for her. In my life this person I sing this song for, is someone who I left someone else for.. And I feel like that is the way it is for a crazy magnetic attraction.. But also some people (Me cough cough) can at times (cough) have that effect on people. AKA Some people are wicked great players in the game of love. And that is just what happens. LIke spiders catching flies so-to-speak. Or diamonds in the light. But then it is more than just that she is so amazing.. It's this line "I have been searching from the bottom to the top for such a sight..." He really was tricked by her magnetism too. It doesn't matter whether she really loves him or not, he's not trying to figure that out. He is trying to figure out why HE can't get her out of his mind like that... So.. The ultimate metaphor of the song is the toughest part.. And other commenters really helped me on this.. he is trying to escape this feeling. He is trying to get away.. But "his feet get pulled in" thought he saw the light? Nope! pulled back in.. What is it that he just can't see? What is it that is bugging him so much.. The key is that there is no puzzle. There is no perfect picture or keys.. It is just this idea that he has created to mask his true feelings for her. he is in love. It's just love. And we as people think that we are so special that no one could do to us like that. could capture us so easily. . but in truth .. they can! The only real relation to the metaphor of "stuck on the puzzle" that I could htink of is probably this: We look at love (and life) however we want to see it. Any semi-wise person can tell you , life's a matter of perception.. So when it comes to the puzzle of life, it really depends on how we are feeling in life at the time. if we feel like we get it, then the picture is complete. If we feel like something is wrong or missing, and we can't go on.. then the puzzle picture is incomplete... And it can gnaw away at you... Until you find what is missing.. Often people can't admit they are crazy or truly in love with someone, until they can admit that they are crazy/truly in love with themselves. But that doesn't happen until we have what we need in the understanding of ourselves. Which takes time and forgiveness, dedication, etc. etc. And only then will our "Puzzles" feel truly fulfilled.. Even with all of the pieces you can't put together a puzzle if you don't know what you want the picture to look like too.. All of it takes inner love and understanding. Something that a young person "Like Oliver in the movie" Probably doesn't have yet.. Teenagers struggle with that stuff. But it's all good in the end.. And that is the underlying fact of the song. "Just" stuck on the puzzle.. but life goes on =) |

This song reminds me of a relationship I had a man when I was 19, which later become more abusive. It reminds me of when we woud be frighteningly fighting out in broad daylight in the middle of my street. He would stalk me by coming to my door everyday even though we clearly had different agendas in the relationship. I didnt want to admit i loved him as more than a friend basically. Although it was slightly more complicated than that. It reminds me of once when we were arguing on the sidewalk infront of this new big house that was in the process of being built. And a nice lady was walking by. We must have looking beyond silly. In such a kind, loving, and expensive neighborhood. These people who “won” or alteast played well, in the rat-race, all around us. I think we were fighting that urge within us, to become just like everyone else. And we fought it together. Meanwhile, i was slowly losing all the other, more realistic and loving, relationships in my life. And after years of giving into self-defeating attitudes, I have finally learned what and who is truly important. Now that I’ve finally let things go, I’ve learned a lot, and I’ve let things go. I have waited so long and I wonder how long it will be till all of my suffering, and realizations will help me admit my heart for real. The truth is, it’s not just a game, and we’re not all rats. We have the ability for great humanity and forgiveness. And that’s an important quality to have. It’s better than hiding. ~~~ Lying about being in love, is in a way, just the same as fighting with someone. And the clockwise witnesses are people who are going in the “right direction” watching people going in the other direction. Sometimes they dont know they are, they don’t know what’s going on! Just a witness. |

This song is about a great man's life, from beginning to end. And it tells of the great things he could have done, after saying what he did do and how it ended up. It's a little bit like the song from the same album, Chatting Today. I think it's about the band as kids and who they are. Then it talks about 'old dan' and who he is. Heading for the number one hit country, I assume he wanted to go somewhere, like to America or something. But it is also a metaphor for the #1 Ideals of life. And in this case, they are somewhat stupid- compared to everything else he could have done. But he treats his higher ideal with greatest of importance. "Like an old, old, old master musician", "But like an old pioneer from outer Afghanistan", "But like an old, old hunter of the female buffalo." Lastly, the band is Irish and the term 'Irish Blue' might mean something specific. BUt generally it just stands for the deep, rich color blue. And a bit of the Irish Pride. Something about the color blue is quiet foolish, and sort of represents to me; standing up for yourself in the eyes of oppression. The emotion expressed just by the color is sort of like a royal sadness. It's different from just 'feeling blue.' So-to-say, Failure at it's finest. Lastly, "Sometimes it reminds me of you." I can only assume this is the singer speaking from the heart about some sort of special failure from his past. One that was also quite, true . . . blue |

woh damn. I am so glad I stumbled upon this today, because I was just walking by my bike outside. And well, I thought how I have abandoned it there on the side. Ever since my friend painted it and left town. The meaning is deep because I actually have two usable bikes now, one was my other friends' and the other is my dad's. Another is ex husband's which I used to ride more but has gotten loose screws and flat tires recently. And my mothers' tires are too old. My brother's is too small, because we both got ours when we were little. Therefore mine was not the kind I wanted and it is big(enough for a 7 year old) and big enough for me now. However it is not one I picked out and though it fits me, it doesn't really. Still, it is mine. And that I have left it out there is a statement towards myself. Perhaps I am tired of the parts of me which were not of my choice in the first place, and used by my friends, and still the only things that are naturally mine. Also, I live by the ocean, so the air probably is making it rust. - Okay now for interpretation of the song. It's just.. It makes so much sense to me. The more I look. The begining of metal chains, like an explosion, doesn't work, or does work. 'Don't look, don't believe it!' Step aside! Dont get hurt. Perhaps by the end of Eventually, by the end, the chains finish colliding. In a way, this could mean, they are going to break. And an explosion could be of mis-communications. Then, the sound is over. You reflect on the singing and the gold ring. Perhaps what it meant. Your path still isn't clear. But You made your own map. I saw you leave your bike in the ocean. I can't explain it but that line itself seems very objective aswell. You let your transport rust. Damn. This song is about me. Haha. And I def feelin' it right now / perhaps I have been. So it's.. Definately about the reflection. And how someone, who *AHUM* he gave his eyes to. Doesn't give a shit anymore. .... Haha!!! Excuse my french. He's talking about his point of view on another person, who obviously can't seem to find a way, thinks they know everything, but is really quite sad. Throwing their bike in the ocean. This song is about how someone is feeling perhaps beginning off a tour, 'as long as i believe (in love) like this skin you're showin' and the keys you gave to me' (to their tour car) (keys to aspects of life) I relate to this song beacuse I too am a gambler, and I know what it's like to look at the world and breathe in easy the gasoline into my blood and only feel comfort in the eyes of all night jails or casinos. "Nightjails...poolhalls Some things are everywhere So for the past I'm diggin a grave so big, It will swallow up the sea" Perhaps he wants to drown out the (not so gutsy) past in a new feeling, in a big grave. the last stanza about seeing things in life you thought you would, is about how the world is really quite hard and after a while of being a gambler you realize you can't live off of your good vibes and good luck. you need reality and common sense as well. So if the song is based off goodwill hunting then, it has to do with a young man's view on what's important in his life. However I don't think it's just about that. For starters, this girl Kelly is an Insistor. Which means she has control of her own life, and runs away from home. '...Do you still lie in bed with fright?' Is him asking if she is still worried about her life at home that she ran away from. Then the next line shows that where other men "lost her" he somehow kept her, "stood still" almost without even trying. In the chorus: Now, if you've ever been to a big deal college, (my reference; McGill) Then all you have to do is go to the college square & see how the people walking around in random directions sort of makes them look somewhat mute. Or silly, and useless(inane). When he calls to her everything that seems important sort of pauses and is put in perspective next to things that last forever? In the Mickey Lisper part the lyrics go aimed at the boy(the song writer.) Perhaps it's a real guy or it's an inner voice of truth. Threatens to stab him in the morning. "When you go and you're on the stage....." This line has got to be my favorite line, I can't interpret it. But in the next line, is the answer. He is not Himself, a 'lover'. "challenge is for lovers" Nor a runner(Like the girl). His decision–"stay here and fight for lover's rights" In the chorus: He offers to be a her badger which is like saying ~i'll be your wild pet~ "kelly don't you go i want you to know..." It's beautiful, really. He's been trying for her, and he's in love with her, even though she was off running off. "it's not your right to be cheating, fighting, and starting life" He's reminding her what his love for her means. Then lastly he wonders if she is in love with someone else she met on the road. "and kelly who's the logger?.... who's trees were felled with might?" What is the meaning of logger? I know tapes n tapes are from minnesota but do girls really still date loggers? Either way it seems someone cut down trees (her trees?) with elegance and might. Very unlike the song writer. "Hold your water tight!" Indeed is about giving birth, but it is like a metaphor, for -beginning a new situation.- It's like he's urging her to wait for the right time to express herself. As well as his hopes that she is indeed in love with him, like so when the baby comes out it will be his. In the chorus: He says not to be terse or shy. Which is like saying don't be angry with me or hide your feelings infront of me. "Just hug my lips" Kissss "and say goodlies " then at the end it's "goodbye" Which means thier relationship did not work out or it did and they are finally being honest and not lying anymore. "I'll be your bail bond" is like saying I will break you out of jail, and in a romantic sense it is saying I will always set you free. Hope that was good. |

this has been one of my most favorite songs since twelfth grade. when i first liked it my life felt so lost after four years I think I can finally say that I feel I don't have to 'worry my life no more' it's really the keyboard procession at the beginning and the slow, like accepting, lure of the tune. as if someone is walking up to you and you're hot and peeling and they're wrapping you in silk sheets and unraveling you like a dance, slowly making love to you without you realizing. since the guys i like generally have blue eyes I think to me, it comes as the perspective of an auspicious person that had temporarily fallen in love with me. |

This song came into my head at a really weird time. At that time I was hanging out with people that my friends were friends with. People I knew mainly through my friend who was this guy I liked, almost.. endlessly, throughout many years. And he sort of knew it. Even though we had become very good friends. I remember once long before this, he caught me crying in his bathroom because he refused to kiss me as a gamble that then I would make out with his friend. And I ran to his room and cried on the bed. He came in, in the dark and said 'you know i just dont like you that way' he tried to make me feel better. Another thing is that I've tried to kiss him and he's turned away from it probably about three times before. But by this time in our lives we had become so sweet and open with eachother. We had almost fully admitted our like, in friendly manners in cars. Then that one night at the party I saw into his emerald glowing eyes and I knew he was happy with me, but it wasn't real. "She said I love you and it suddenly clicked That she was only saying what she wanted me to hear And I said Please don't lie to me Mary" . So I see that he would pretend to be in love with me, even if he really wasn't. It's so sweet of him to do that I almost cry. While at the same time it also goes both ways. Not that I can imagine my friend crying. But I know to a certain extent I am over him, and have been through out all of the years we got to know eachother and I tried to get him with me still. So the mary is also me, pretending that no matter what I do I will always love him. When the truth is that I've gotten over him long ago and I really can't stop loving others. To end this long personal message, I'd like to admit that I have been studying the secret language of birthdays for about five years now, and I know every day by heart. I literally celebrate many days. As if they are my own. And the last line is about the person not being able to really face the truth. The whole song is about that. This whole song is beautiful. I sang it once to my friends'/ a crowd. The first line that strikes is 'wounded in the line of duty.' then, it reminds me of someone I knew very closely 'parachuting acid onto diplomatic cocktail parties' , my friend would attend fancy parties to which he boasted to me later about acting like a complete fool, to crash them. Now Fidel Castro was a great man, he worked hard for reform and became a leader. To urge him to 'abandon fields and castles, leave it all and like a man, come back to nothing special.' It's like asking someone with great ambitions to give them up for the lesser greater things in life.'Such as waiting rooms...' (My friend urged me this way.) Then it explains how tired he is. I'll get to that later.... 'I never asked but I heard' This part has to do with giving up 'your lot' something important for 'the poor' those who needed it. 'But then I overheard your prayer, That you be this and nothing more Than just some grateful faithful woman's favorite singing millionaire,' This line gets to me. As it is a 'prayer' secret of personal choice, like to simply love a woman. (I find it hilarious because of the line favorite singing millionaire, and my own goals to become a singer.} It has probably something to do with leonard cohen, himself. It's all a struggle to become an ambitiously beautiful humble man. Then it goes back to, with a more honest tone: "I know you need your sleep now, I know your life's been hard. But many men are falling where you promised to stand guard." Which explains how, truly difficult it is, for certain people to live with humble purposes. I assume it means, he was injured in the line of duty, and changed his life around to live around average selfish, but still somewhat angelic purposes. However there is still that very and more-real part of him that is dying 'but many men are falling, where you promised to stand guard' So the last part is the finale. In which I assume he falls head over heals for his real, original heart. Even though she or he is not there, he is just illuminating. 'Then let the other selves be wrong...' He's saying, let every other person I was/we were, enrage with anger and come find us, and we will see what we have done 'till every taste is on the tongue' 'and every kind of freedom done' keep going until they've conquered all of their bad & foolish deeds. 'then oh my love' (I) Wouldn't have to live in this false persona anymore. |

OH man do I love this song. "Your fingers dimming the lights" This part reminds me of two personal things. One is that when you seduce someone you get them in your bed then you go to the light switch and dim it (turn it off) while you're looking them in the eyes. Also I have a specific moment in my life when someone I liked touched me in the dimmed light of a music show, behind the croud. The look in their eyes was magnetic. Even though I walked away to avoid my feelings, I couldn't forget it. MORE ABOUT ME: I stayed up late all summer working on a puzzle to figure out stuff. I would be up all night. And I still am. It's like you're searching for something other than what's in the middle "I tried to swim to the side..." Still. I'd like to say I understand the point of the view of the woman. I've made people leave or want to leave someone they're with or like. I don't think it's a bad thing. I just think that it's a part of life. And you find someone you like who pulls you, and you think they're the one,("seen the light") but they're not. You were just stuck . . . =) |

This has got to be m favorite song for the last five years. For a long time i thought it was "I found a wall, a wall in you" and I loved that. also I thought it was saying "Just wanna be a beach bum, get faded with you" which corresponds because i've loved a stoner, or two, before. Also, might I add that I've dated a literal beach bum. I have certain memories of him and I in the sand, kissing or on streets by the boardwalk kissing. But I like this song best, because I have a hard time with my Mom and we get into horrible fights where I feel like the whole world is caving in, and I get sad because everyone that I loved has left me. All to find the tune of this song in my head... and it's just like... I don't have to tower in control of everything.. (standing tall) I don't have to be struggle with being myself (walking the line) I don't have to endlessly argue (fighting the fight) no making rights[rules](passing the bill) no tiring day job( punching the till) no making deals ( shaking the hand) being like others?(feather to flock) listening ?for something(ear to the ground) belting emotional expression(singing the heart) lying, or saying the right things(talking the talk) creating something-playing ? Okay so something quite similar like thisstory happened to me. There's something you all doof bags are missing, plus the lyric is wrong {Oh no, not me ( I ) never lost control } The first two stanzas are about the man, and then he goes home and thinks about it, and the last two stanzas it's We must have ~ as in him and the world. We never lost ~ never really stopped living forthright . It ends personally, saying "now I have become a man who sold the world" - Now the overall term, selling the world, basically means giving up, giving up something big. Usually the process comes upon unwanted, and if feels like death, but this man though may feel real pain; shows and thinks of it not. He 'sold it.' It's gone. |

Going into her own endless dreaming. so in the past he was doing as usual, which was acting like his father( which generaly means being open to life and loss and a foolish way) knees represent dependency , and as usual he was going to see her at her mothers [father and mother ~dual representation~sets up for love aspect] noses represents foolish and obvious thoughts. hands represent what You DO. so they were close friends and happy at that. plants, patches, pants, and simple treasures and get pleasure and she’s in his dreams or he can’t sleep for somereason because of her so plans don’t really matter kus she’s already fuckin him up Then there comes changes and he’s like WHAT THE HELL WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR SIMPLE PLEASURES, like eating apples is it gone? you have to keep it *make sure your happy when you leave your summer places* then with the body parts again, it gets harder: *pretty little femur sitting in my cherry dream boat i’d be sad if you rejected from my hip bone and my knee* Basically this part of the song gets overly dreamy and unreal, the body parts represent eachother and how either in day dreams or reality, lying together just seems so perfect >>then>>> even more dreamy sailing away from continents and touching lovers hair is making it more realistic but more obviously a dream. SO in his head she’d be happy about him touching her? (not quite certain here) maybe fingering , -ucking, or kissing is symbolized by *nervous how i felt in there* and afraid to hurt her *very cautious* or get hurt. then it gets kinda awkward that they just broke the dream world into a complete reality (“what did you say?“hey there?!?” now they need to understand their new obvious love relationship with when they want to see eachother. //they want to be together often - but don’t need to be together often (which in the end is what destroys the relationship with dreams rather than actuality) {chorus} imagine a hill they run and dance and play IN THE DAY shoulders represent ‘need for love’ so shaking is like getting out lovely tension BY NIGHT *you push me down into the grains* is getting serious and like i said earlier noses represent ‘foolish, obvious thoughts’ so thats what they express with eachother. like flaunting how close they are it’s ridiculous. why is it called GRASS? because the trick of perfect grass is how it's cut |
