Okay, so to me it sounds like this is the story of a couple who has been married for five years and already they have fallen into the loveless pattern of routine. That is why they say, I never ever want to see you to our wedding day, their anniversary. A lot of couples are like this. They just meander through and are content to be in a stagnant and half-hearted marriage but they still feign excitement and closeness on their anniversary. These two are not content to be so and this is an example of the very human struggle to get away from that kind of life. I get that from it anyway. I dunno. But I think it relates to a wide variety of people, not just married couples or long distance lovers, but also those who are not content to just pretend to care. This is a song for the romantics out there. The ones that cause all the drama and fuss because they long for something real. That is what this song says to me. It's sweet. |

This is me last night: buried under my covers, bawling and spitting as I sang Oh Comely to myself in an effort to drown out the replaying sounds of the horrible scene I had interrupted. To some that song makes no sense. To me it does. "it isn't so pretty as you'd like to guess in your memory, you're drunk on your awe to me it doesn't mean anything at all." God, this humanity that we cannot escape! We take what should be beautiful and warp it. Mangum seems to find innocence in Anne Frank, whom he references in the middle of the song. Reminds me of Bright Eyes, "I Believe in Symmetry" the lines "the arc of time, the stench of sex, the innocence you can't protect." Anyway, yeah, it makes sense to me. |

So, yeah I am commenting on this song even though nobody probably cares anymore, but I just wanted to say... I think this song is about conor oberst himself. I mean, if you think about it that is why he compares himself to his "brother" coughing and shaking in a bathtub. I can't say for certain, I will never know, but as I can best relate this to my own knowledge I would guess that this is a song about "rebirth" He explains it best. it's not complex to understand if you just listen to it as something not so foreign to yourself. Everybody is capable of feeling this way. He's using narrative to relate something more conceptual. It's simple, about being lost, confusion, self-loathing and all that jazz. Not to discount the song, it's genius, but relatable, At least in my opinion. If this really happened to his baby brother he would probably not be so callous as to air these personal details of his family life. Think about it, would you??? |
