Lorde – Royals Lyrics 12 years ago
Im kinda irritated over all the commentary here.

Why do almost everybody CUT OFF their interpretation at the second ref?

I wanna talk about THIS part right here:

"And we'll never be royals
It don't run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain't for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler, you can call me Queen Bee
And baby I'll rule (I'll rule I'll rule I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy "

I think we can all agree by now that the song starts by telling thats shes from humble quarters and consistently making references to the rap/pop-elite (wich she calls the "royals") and what they sing about and what they do, and how her own life will never be like theirs No, she has found a different kind of buzz. Thtas the EASY part.

Now comes this section wich is like the conclusion in the song:
And we'll never be royals
It don't run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain't for us
WE CRAVE A DIFFERENT KIND OF BUZZ

... saying that she (or they) will never be like them, its not in their blood. its just not for them, they've found something else to crave: (NOW, WHAT IS IT??)

Let me be your ruler, you can call me Queen Bee
And BABY I'll rule (I'll rule I'll rule I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy "

... Well,. its a fantasy to rule, and shes talking to her "BABY" (this seems kinda important), let me live that fantasy. Doesnt this sound kinda sexual? At least it does to me.

If this last part is about ruling the world or making the top charts, then the whole song would be talking against itself. Shes just said thet all this is NOT for her, so why would she wanna live THAT fantasy. It just dont make sense that way.

Shes saying she and her friends has cracked the code and this is like the conclusion:

To be happy with counting your dollars at the train, to never be like the royals, to not care about "their love affairs", to not have worries ("Life is great without a care"), but to live out the fantasy of ruling her boyfriend (in bed?), he can call her Queen B. ("and I'm in love with beeing Queen") Cause this is more "her kinda buzz". Then it kinda makes sense.

This may very well be flawed, but at least Im trying to look at the part of the text everybodys so conveniently skipping, or at least not giving any weight.

But as long as nobodys going to give me another fitting idea to what she might rule, Im gonna stick with this one.

as ALL of the others (who want to make this a song about Jesus), you keep on SKIPPING THINGS THAT DONT MATCH your interpretation, as well as jumping back and forth in a the bible, referring to this and that.

Lets agree on ONE thing; Theres ONE voice - telling the story of himself.

You cant suddenly bring in a parabel that Jesus once told to ANOTHER man. Wheres the connection to the song?!? WHat is it trying to tell.. by your standards it seems to speak of nothing special, just a flat story of Jesus life. No MEANING???

In the seventh paragrah line, you change it again, and its NOT about Jesus, but John the Baptist?!?!? "Revolutionaries wait for my head on a silverplate". Who is telling this story, Jesus, God, John, saint peter, the holy spirit? And that makes Salome the revolutionary?? or her mother???? Theres ABSOLUTELY NO comparison what so ever.

Later, seventh paragraph line, "Just a puppet on a lonely string, oh who would ever want to be king" u speak of an "early Jewish interpretation that the Messiah would be a political leader" , wtf man. You cant just turn the tables like that. Theres a person: TELLING HIS STORY. Its not told by a narrator on a tv- documentary.

What about all the lies, Never an honest word, but that was whenI ruled the world.. Is that a parbael he has told once too?

it was a wicked and wild wind, blew down the doors to let me in... ???????? oh, this must be from the old testament, when he punished the egyptians!!! right?!

or from the first verse: I used to roll the dice, feel the fear in my enemies eyes..

Honestly, Listening to your interpretation makes me realize why there are so many different views on the bible. You can easily make the strangest allegations and back it up with a number of quotes and stories, interpreted to fit.

It feels like a 10.000 bits puzzle, and u have taken a few different pieces and put them together cause they kinda fit eachothers corners. But there just aint no picture there to me.

And for the record: My grandfather is a protestant priest, and I come from a (more than average) christian background. None of your comparisons are new to me. I SEE the religious symbols used in the poem. I just dont swim in them.

This song is OBVIOUSLY politically inspired and although it IS about the french revolution, my thoughts is that it is a VERY CLEAR comparison to the former leader of the US, mr George Bush jr. I think the song intends to both warn the people of America (and maybe even Bush himself) against the politics of the country, while it kind of also glows over his/his administrations (soon?) fall. If its a political song, the time of release should be highlighted, and this WAS the last year of Bush's (administrations) period as president.

Like some other guy mentioned; its common to have multiple thoghts in your head while writing poems, and I think the RED LINE here is the comparison between Ludvig and George.

I'll give some quick examples here (getting tired of all the lyrics repeating, repeating):

I used to rule the world : self-explanatory - if this is Bush were talking about.
Seas would rise when I gave the word : could be war fleets
Now in the morning I sleep alone : but its over now.
Sweep the streets I used to own : hes all alone.

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes : hes a fearded leader. Much power. Lotta weapons?
Listen as the crowd would sing : hailed by his people
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!" : occupation (of countrys/land).

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me : Change in the people. had it all, changed in a minute
And I discovered that my castles stand : and he discovered that his foundation for leadership
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand : was very weak.

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing : Times up, hes senting the fall.
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing :
Be my mirror, my sword and shield : Prayer to soldiers (the missionaries), win the war (sword),
My missionaries in a foreign field : reflect me good (in newspapers? (mirror)) and/to protect me (shield) (from the crowd?).

For some reason I can't explain : his intentions arent neccesarrily bad, (although his wits)
Once you go there was never : - need some help on this. who? went where?
Never an honest word : just lies and lies to cover up lies.
And that was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind : operation sandstorm? 2006?
Blew down the doors to let me in : invasion.
Shattered windows and the sound of drums : tanks. firearms.(drums)
People couldn't believe what I'd become : the world looks at America/Bush in disbelief. Even some americans.

Revolutionaries wait :
For my head on a silver plate : yes, they do.
Just a puppet on a lonely string : hes just a puppeter of the administration.
Oh, who would ever want to be king? <--: and hes just realizing it.

I hear Jerusalem bells ared ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain <--: his intensions wasnt necessarily bad.
I know Saint Peter won't call my name <--: but it seems the consequenses are unforgiveable.
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world.

Well thats my point of view.

I think its written about the french revolution, but with mr Bush' (and the US'!) situation in between the lines, constantly.

Im happy to be corrected/persuaded, with missing holes, or other COMPLETELY different WHOLE ideas...

Just dont take a single word aout of the lyrics and quote me a couple of chapters from the bible - preferrably from something that couldnt POSSIBLY have anything to do with the rest of the poem - . that just gets so sick. This poem is NOT from Jesus' point of view. He dont say things like: "Just a puppet on a lonely string. Oh, who would ever wanna be king" or "For some reason I can't explain, I know St. Peter won't call my name". He just dont. Jesuzz...

Theres a lot of that on these pages. was just over to look at Let it Rock, where this guy did the same. Let it Rock.

Let... it... Rock.
