the meaning of the song (in my opinion) - it's about forgiveness, forgiveness about something that happened a long time ago. the singer is saying that it's now water under the bridge. the two verses seem to be about how there never seems to be a good time to dredge up stale/sleeping ("now is a bad time as any"), bad memories ("sleeping dogs"). a waking of the past seems to be required in order to move on, beyond the existing guilt which seems to be eating away at the subject of attention ("i've watched you slowly winding down for years/you can't keep going on like this") the chorus, of course, is the speaker voicing her forgiveness and giving comfort, saying that everyone makes mistakes ("none of us were angels"), we learn from our mistakes ("it's in the ABC of growing up"), don't torture yourself over it. this is a melancholy song about life lessons, yet it is accompanied by a meaningful and hopeful message that i hope i, and other listeners, can learn from :) |

| Oops, silly me. He's obviously talking about a girl because of the long hair. | |

oh, and the singer is probably sitting alone in front of the fire, thinking how how the fire, something seemingly unrelated to his soulmate, somehow reminds him of his soulmate. he views the the fire, with its periodic crackling beat, as "primal" (i.e. fundamental or vital), just as a pulse is. something that has the capability to destroy as well as keep someone warm and alive seems to give him both pain and comfort. the title suggests self-destructive behaviour (obviously) and, due to his loss, a feeling that he belongs somewhere else. |

I noticed that there is a bit of discussion on whether he's singing about a girlfriend/lover or whether it's about a friend. I think it's a person, whether it be a friend or a lover, that he was so close to and understood so well, that he felt that their heartbeats were in sync with each other. They could have comfortable silences with each other, only interrupted by everyday noises like airplanes and car horns. Kind of like a soulmate, but I don't necessarily think his "soulmate" could only be a woman. I think it could be a man or a woman. To me, it seems like this is a song about someone trying to deal with the loss (maybe death, but probably a breakup since he mentions the "sea between us") of his "soulmate". In the first verse, it seems that he feels such a sense of loss that every little thing, even something as insignificant as a piece of hair the length of his soulmate, reminds him of his loss. It's interesting how it seems like he wants so suffer (hence the wrapping the hair around the finger until it turns purple) with the reminder of his loss. I'm not sure what "you can only take what you can carry" means in the context of the song. I would like to know more about what other people think. for some reason it reminds me of a situation in which a house is burning down ("a fire, a fire"), and you can only take out what you can carry in order to survive. maybe he was so dependent on his soulmate that when s/he left, he was unable to take back all of the pieces of himself that was given to his soulmate. he seems full of self-blame and feels undeserving, hence "i was always set to self-destruct". The last two lines of the last verse of the song are so sad! No resolution at all. The distance between him and his soulmate only increases his loneliness and the pain of his loss. every small object/event of him/her is "amplified" and also permanently recorded as a reminder on his "cave," a metaphorical representation of his isolated, lonely mind, containing memories of the past--Just the opposite of a resolution. Wow, as you can tell from my mini essay above (i can't believe i wrote so much), i just love this song. i'd love to hear what others think. |
