Pearl Jam – Unthought Known Lyrics 15 years ago
Great analysis. I love this song, especially because the music fits the words so well. When I listen to it I get pumped up to kick some ass, but in a kind, benevolent way that will benefit mankind.

-Dream the dreams of other men... I think this means to put yourself in the shoes of others, especially those less fortunate than you. Think about their dreams, and what you can do to help.

Very inspirational.

Pearl Jam – Just Breathe Lyrics 15 years ago
I was 16 when Pearl Jam's 10 came out and they have been my favorite band since then. I buy every album when it comes out and most have been good, some very under-rated (Yield comes to mind). When I bought Back-Spacer several weeks ago I was a little disappointed in the first single, "the fixer," but was overwhelmed when I heard this song. I literally felt compelled to tell all my friends who have ever liked music at all to download "Just Breathe." I'm glad that it is getting some radio play now- I hope the younger kids can appreciate Pearl Jam the way I have.

To me this song is a beautiful reflection on a mature love that is beyond words but can be expressed and shared on a more essential level. It isn't about infatuation, love at first sight, or any simple form of lust and passion. Instead this is about a love that has been hurt, at times neglected and maybe worse, but has also created long-lasting and meaningful joy- even life itself in the form of children. As I get older I can relate; the reasons I love my wife now are not the same as when we met, they have grown deeper and much more about who she essentially is. I think when he says, "hold me til I die, meet you on the other side," he is not talking about an iminent death, I take it to mean"stay with me forever." Anyway, good song.

Simon and Garfunkel – The Obvious Child Lyrics 15 years ago
Any idea what, "the cross is in the ballpark" means?

I've always felt that it means that Paul finds a connection between God and baseball. This may be a stretch but for me it makes sense. Any other ideas?

Alice in Chains – Angry Chair Lyrics 15 years ago
Glad you posted this- because you are correct. The "pink cloud"/praying/serenity references in this song are explicitly AA/NA references. This song is so dark and haunting because it captures the mindset of somebody who has been in rehab, shown the tools to kick addiction, and is about to get high anyway. Before going to rehab you can lie to yourself about your addiction much more easily than afterward. I don't think he is bashing AA/NA, I think he is saying, "I gave rehab a shot, but it didn't work, and now I know I can't stop from killing myself on purpose with herion."

By the way, I think:

"Corporate prison, we stay, hey
I'm a dull boy, work all day, oh
So I'm strung out anyway, hey"

Could be a report of something somebody else said in one of his meetings in rehab. Layne wasn't exactly a dull boy working all day in a corporate world. But in AA/NA meetings, it is pretty common to hear a business guy say something like this.
