| Beck – Bottle Of Blues Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Like those who see Zeppelin in this song, I am reminded of Pink Floyd's song San Tropez when I hear this song - Maybe it is the same tuning? I don't know. The song make me think about the concept of taking a pill designed to promote normal functioning when the person taking the pill would not otherwise be functioning normally. What is normal? Why is a pill needed to achieve this? For the singer here, it appears unrequited love has given him the desire to kill his desires. I think impotence is a side effect of the pills, not the reason for taking the pills - anyway that is my take on this one. |

| I for one absolutely think Beck knows blues scales. He is first a consummate musician and second an adept showman. How pretentious do you sound questioning whether Beck knows simple blues scales - jeesh. I know I am five years late to this, but I recently discovered this site... | |
| Soundgarden – No Wrong No Right Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Restless widow in the dark Carelessly looks for a spark Near the trap fate rears its head No hesitation, victim dead Just from the start it's the end There is something more going on here. Black widow spiders kill their mates. That is how they got their name. The spider that crawls up the wall is male but somehow has the eggs. If black widows kill their mates after mating, then this spider is not a black widow. From the little research I have been able to do about spiders, reading about them makes my skin crawl, I do not know of any males that carry the eggs. Perhaps the males are responsible for making the web where the females live - I dunno. I believe the song is speaking of the fear of death. Vipers and spiders are commonly feared by people and play a large role in the lyrics. The song seems to be saying that you can try to prevent death by watching for vipers and poison snakes, but then a damned spider can still get you and those are much harder to see. You can live in fear if you choose, but there is too much too fear for that to do you any good. |

| Wilco – A Shot in the Arm Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| There is nothing bloodier than blood. It is an impossibility. The singer is contemplating whether he needs something that he can not possibly have. He may think he needs something more than he is, but becoming something more than you are isn't done by a simple injection. The change has to come from the inside.. Oh you've changed. If the change is from a shot in the arm it is not usually a good one. If it is from struggling through the bad times without reaching for that shot, it is probably good. This is just my take on this song. I am sure I am way off from Tweedy's vision, but I wonder if his original intention for this song has changed over time... | |
| Wilco – Via Chicago Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Rest my head on a pillowy star And a cracked door moon Says I haven't gone too far Marcussummerteeth I believe you are on to something here. Whether this is how Tweedy originally intended it or not I will not pretend to know, but I can see how your interpretation in light of recovery makes sense. The last lines are chilling when read this way. Addiction is a bitch and will tell you what you want to hear to keep you active in the addiction. "I haven't gone too far" could mean that you can keep on using because it's okay, you can still get back to normal - later but right now you can use. Or if you are in recovery and are feeling tempted, it could be the addiction reminding you that it is just an arms length away and any progress you feel you've made is easily overcome. Whatever the case I know that I certainly have another relapse in me, but another recovery is not as certain. |

| Wilco – I Am Trying to Break Your Heart Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| The meaning has changed for me several times. It sounds amazing at incredibly high volume on LP. I am listening right now. Fantastic in a tremendous and understated kind of way. Things fall apart and the pieces will fit together somehow but who really knows how now? | |
| Wilco – Sky Blue Sky Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I think there is more to it than just watching the parade pass in his hometown on a rainy day. That is what inspired him to write the song, but that is not the extent of it. For me it has much to do about the perspective shifts people go through in life and that people often feel that there is something missing that would make there present situation better. I take this song as a nod to enjoying the moment for what it is and not what it isn't. A feat that is difficult to do except in hindsight. | |
| Wilco – Shake It Off Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I have listened many many many times to this song and to this album. I am still undecided about the meaning of this one. The imagery is terrific. The chorus is inspiring. The delivery is superb. But what concerns me is - is it a good thing that he is shaking it off? Upon further consideration, I am still not sure. Maybe the singer is sad that he's gotta shake it off. What is spoiling his heart? Sleep? His dreams? If anyone has any insight, I would like to hear it. | |
| Wilco – Either Way Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| When I first started listening to this song I was trying to get and stay clean and also in a very touchy place in a relationship. To me the song is telling a loved one not to worry that his or her actions or words might cause a relapse. It helped me tell the other person to relax and live without being on egg shells around me. I had to do what I had to do and that no matter what else happened, I still had to do what I had to do. It is a very selfish and a very empowering concept. To me the song is about acceptance of myself, and those things I can not control. | |
