I agree with your interpretation except for the a few parts. I think the third verse is about him trying to quit as you say but the ending "Don't let me go" means that in the end he doesn't want to let go of the drugs. the 4th verse might be talking about the euphoria leaving him and the "memories" might mean the drugs that haunt him and bringing him closer to the sky might no matter how grey could be referencing being in heaven but since he knows it really isn't it's grey as in tainted. This would then lead on to the 5th verse.

I found it rather amusing that this could also be about god from the viewpoint of a sinner. He does mention praying, light being gone from his heart, having lost one's way, trying to reach heaven but falling down again, forsaking his name, his words safeguarding you and him leading you, etc.
