Florence + the Machine – Dog Days Are Over Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree with Noelito. I think this song is about a woman who was in an unhappy / abusive relationship and tried to deal with it by drinking.

The days of being inebriated are the "dog days." “The horses are coming” refers to a new life, things are changing, the woman has an opportunity to make a significant change and get out of the unhappy situation as well as heal from her addiction.

“Run fast for your mother and fast for your father, Run for your children for your sisters and brothers” means to embrace the change even if you can’t find it within yourself to do this for yourself, do it for those you love. Let go of the current relationship and move forward as fast as you can because life is short and time is measured.

Sara Bareilles – King of Anything Lyrics 15 years ago
Good call, arlash! But I think this can apply to lots of relationships where one person tries to control the other person and everything around them. Men especially are socialized to do this - and often they feel a sense of responsibility to take control. I love the message of this song - very empowering for women or anyone who is trying to deal with a controlling person, group or organization - and it can be freeing for the person who feels the need to try to control everything!!!

My Morning Jacket – Evil Urges Lyrics 15 years ago
"Do as ye will and harm none." When you make a commitment to be faithful to someone is IS hurting them and yourself (your integrity) if you break that commitment. This song is not promoting sexual infidelity - it is supporting people's rights to love whoever they choose if they would not be hurting someone. Mineonly - you deserve to be with someone who is REALLY committed to you if that is what you seek. When someone breaks their promise to you they are hurting themselves far more because they no longer are trustworthy nor do they have integrity which leads to self-esteem. Keep your integrity - and your self-esteem - intact and move on.

Sister Hazel – All For You Lyrics 15 years ago
This is a GREAT song! It's about a man who has been confused (There's been times, I'm so confused.) He was on his way out I just can't turn and walk away) but he realizes there is enough between them to salvage the relationship and so, in order to prove how much he loves her (And I can't do Enough to prove,It's all for you) he is making changes for the relationship. The end result of their relationship is still unknown (Wonder if I'll always be with you,) and he isn't sure why he feels so strongly about her (It's hard to say what it is I see in you) but he does know she really cares (Rain comes pouring down Falling from blue skies Words without a sound Coming from your eyes) and he realizes she is who he wants to be with (All my roads, They lead to you.) Sometimes in relationships we tend to lose our way and we have to figure out how to get the relationship back on track. Sometimes all it takes is to try (Maybe cause I'm trying) to make things right. It's an upbeat song that makes you feel all is right in the world - at least for now. I love it!

Ben Harper – She's Only Happy In The Sun Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree this song is about a woman who is addicted (the pain and the laughter brought you to your knees.) Her addiction could be to many things - drugs, alcohol, the highs and lows of mental illness, working all the time - something or someone else besides him. She is only happy when she gets high or drunk or is manic or is gone doing whatever she is addicted to. Her number one "love" is her substance so he sees the real her only briefly - then she's gone again.

Ryan Adams – When the Stars Go Blue Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about a young woman who is getting married and where she will turn when things don't go well in her marriage. Its about the young man who truly loves her and wants to be there for her even though she is marrying someone else and, at the same time, about the young woman who, like the Fool in the tarot, is about to step off the edge of the mountain and plunge into the vast unknown. It is about a young lover who is committed to be there for his love in the future when she is unhappy. It is possible that the reference to the "star" is to a celebrity.

David Gray – The Light Lyrics 15 years ago
His lover has ended the relationship (You turn out the light) and he is dealing with the inital pain (boulders of desire.) He wants them to get back together (let's get in this car and drive....come rollin' out of the shadows at me.) The main emotion is the pain of their break up and his desire for them to get back together.

My Morning Jacket – Evil Urges Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song - the music, the lyrics and the message. This song is a message to the conservative Christian Right (and anyone else) who claim that homosexuality, mixed-race/class relationships are evil - an "abomination unto God." The message encourages people to stop being afraid to be open to love whomever they are attracted to, challenges the arrogant (vain) who judge others, and acknowledges the spectrum of normalcy inherent in human attraction and love. "Evil Urges" asserts that the time is NOW to let go of our judgements. The song seems to support free love (To love whoever I want just-a whenever I can)as well as long-term commitment (And dedicate your love to any woman or man.) The song admonishes us to let go of judgement of the choices others make when it comes to love relationships - as long as we don't hurt anyone. It reminds me of the creed "Do as ye will and harm none." Well said, Yim Yames and MMJ.

Thanks for sharing this - I was laughing so hard my stomach hurt! Brilliant!

The Gideons have distributed 1.5 billion Bibles since 1908. The colors of the covers represent the different groups for whom the Bibles are targeted. Strangely, I don't see hotel room visitors on the list.

Orange: for sidewalk distribution to middle/high school students
Green: for college/university students
Red: for in-school distribution to Middle/High school students
Digital Camouflage/Desert Camouflage: for the military
Dark blue: for law enforcement personnel, firefighters, and EMTs
White: for medical professionals
Light blue: for distribution by the Auxiliary only
Brown: personal worker's testaments (for individual witnessing by Gideons)
Periwinkle: personal worker's testaments (for individual witnessing by the Auxiliary)

Guess hotel visitors get the leftovers.

Neil Young – Bandit Lyrics 15 years ago
Really nice references to Dylan's work, azkm. It is fascinating to witness two artists acknowledging and playing off each other's work.
