fatalism, you got it right. i had always misheard that line: you swear you just saw a feathery woman carry a blindfolded man through the trees i always took it on face value...that supernatural stuff was happening. kinda like a scene from a john connolly book...which incidentally always envoke the national for me since I had that free CD that came with one of his books, containing thirsty...but reading your post i realised that society imposes such a crushing uniformity on us, you either conform or become negated. The line becomes: so you swear... it becomes accusational. we all collude in the lie that capitalist society will satisfy and satiate our desires for belonging and owning things. for being unique and special...of course its a lie but if we didn't support it we would have to face the uncomfortable questions. to be unique we feel that we need to stand out, to hold a cause, to: Make up something to believe in your heart of hearts so you have something to wear on your sleeve of sleeves ...i love this song so much even if I don't fully get it |

"It's a common fetish for a doting man to ballerina on the coffee table cock in hand" The first few times I listened to this album these lines passed me by, then when I listened a bit closer I was like...did I just hear that! haha...I love the national for those moments, they have the whole package, music, atmosphere, emotion, crazy lyrical flourishes, great characters... can't wrap my head around this verse though! |
