Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is just one person talking to the other person. I think she (Karen O) realizes that this person has to leave or will leave no matter what, maybe they aren't breaking up, just being seperate for a while. She tells him, Maps, ( I say Maps is whoever she is talking to like a put your name here type of thing) "pack up don't stray" as in "go ahead and go but remember me, don't cheat" While she knows this person is leaving and wants them to go and remember her she also knows she wants him to stay "Wait, they don't love you like I love you." She feels like whoever or whatever he is leaving for, maybe business or something, that they don't love him that she wants him to stay because whatever it is is not as important as their love.
My favorite version of this song is Live at the Filmore version (you can look it up on myspace) before Karen O starts singing she states that the song is a Yeah Yeah Yeahs love song and then goes on a long drunken rant about who its about (everyone) I love the video of the performance (I can't find it anymore) because it shows her drinking on stage as she is talking. I think this song cause her some pain. In the music video she is visibly upset as her eyes well up with tears and she cries. Yes I know its acting but obviously this is a tough love song.

The Civil Wars – Poison & Wine Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song! I have to agree that it totally kills when recovering from a broken heart but I think it explains the intricacies of relationships and breaking up.
The man feels like he has a hold on the relationship that he can control what the woman knows and feels. I think he is trying to hide that maybe he is slowly falling out of love with her or that that spark has just gone "You only know what I want you to"
But the woman knows that something is up that she is losing him "I know everything you don't want me to."
I think the fact that she says "You think your dreams are the same as mine" is proof that he thinks he has a hold on their relationship that he thinks that he can control where their relationship goes and that there is something wrong in their relationship because he is wrong.
She is upset because she is losing him and she wishes that he would try to prove her suspicions wrong "I wish you'de hold me when I turn my back"
He knows that the less he tries the more she will, I think its interesting that they put this part in the song because I think its something that they both are aware. They both know that she will always try even though he doesn't want to.
I think that even though the man doesn't feel the spark anymore that he will always choose to be with her, maybe because she is his best friend, the one he goes to or whatever and because he does love her, but not in the same way as he did. "I don't have a choice but I still choose you" "I don't love you but I always will" and she is hurt and angry with him but she still wants to be with him "I don't love you but I always will"
The song could also be that they both don't want to be together but they feel like they have no other choice that they have been together for so long or they feel like they have to keep up appearances.

Karen O and the Kids – Hideaway Lyrics 16 years ago
I think she is preparing a person who is leaving "Ride away gonna take me from my man". I think when she says "know you've always been the one" and "Know they'll never understand" she is prepping them for those around them that don't understand why the one she loves is leaving, they don't really get their relationship. She tells the one she loves to "Know you've always been the one" because she doesn't want him to forget her or her love. She knows that while he is gone they will be surrounded by people who are making further commitments in their relationships or doing the things the two of them are putting on hold so that he can do whatever it is he is doing "We'll have a bit of fun watching everyone pass us by"

Laura Veirs – July Flame Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is definitely about unrequited love/lust in my opinion. Refering to this person as July Flame gives the listener the idea that she has a passion for this person. She wants to be with this person, to be able to claim him. I am guessing that he is someone she is close too but can't move to that next level with because he isn't interested in her that way "Sweet summer peach, just out of my reach" and I think that she feels like she can't tell him how she is feeling because she knows he will not respond the way she wants so she keeps it inside and it eats her up "ashes of a secret heart..."
This is a great song!

Imogen Heap – The Moment I Said It Lyrics 16 years ago
The first time I heard this song it was at the end of a really intense Criminal Minds episode that ended pretty sadly. I looked up the song lyrics, found the name and then looked it up on youtube to find the song, I found this dance choregraphed by Kate Jablonski(I think she is really talented!) and when I watched it, to me it said everything that this song was about. (here is the url if you guys are curious, keep in mind its lyrical dance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxKa0KEhpTc&feature=related)

I think that this song is about two people in a relationship, I think that either she has cheated or he he has cheated more than likely it is him I think "Who are you calling at this hour?" and that she tells him or confronts him "The moment I said it the moment I opened my mouth." and then he becomes visually upset "Lead in your eyelids, bulldozed the life out of me" I think that the man decides to leave, try and harm himself or the person that she has had an affair with "Just put back the car keys or somebodies gonna get hurt..." I think that their argument becomes physical because she says "I've never seen you like this and I don't like it you're scaring me to death" and I think the smash is the sound of him hitting her or the sound of their relationship crashing or falling apart. She obviously wants things to be ok to stay together or maybe to just go back to the way they were but he doesn't.

Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Lyrics 16 years ago
When I first listened to this song I thought maybe it was about a serial killer maybe it was just talking about someone who did something terrible and the killing that he did was just Sufjan's way of saying this person damaged a lot of people. I ended up looking up John Wayne Gacy Jr. to find out and what I found was horrifying but interesting (I am a pysch major so of course I was facinated).
I guess what was so striking to me was that there were several times in which the police and John's peers didn't follow leads or suspect him because he was SUCH a charmer! People didn't think that he was capable of even being involved. I think that is part of what is important to remember when listening to Sufjan's song that this man did terrible things he rapped and murdered over 30 men and buried many of them in his house, but he was so good at hiding it that no one, except those close to some of the disappearing boys, would suspect him. I think what Sufjan is saying in the last two lines of his song "And on my best behavior I am really just like him, look undereath the floorboards to see what I have hid" is that people can hid things very well and you never know what a person is really like. From a christian perspective I also think he is saying that he is just the same when it comes to sin. To God every sin is the same lying and stealing are just the same as murdering a child, I know that sounds really horrible but its true. Anyhow the state of Sufjans soul is the same as John's when it comes to sin.
