I always interpreted this song as a guy who hold all his anger and bitterness inside and just bottles it all up. The reason he likely does this is because he's only gotten more grief from sharing his feelings with the world. Mean Mr. Mustard, who is just some poor old guy the speaker meets. He tells the speaker that he shouldn't keep everything bottled up. Things may be hard now, but time is all the luck you need, which is to say "all things heal with time." So the speaker has a choice (presented in the chorus): He can either stay lucky or he can talk about his thoughts and feelings. Ultimately, he decides that he just isn't old enough to make it work like the homeless man he spoke to does. |
