Kurt Cobain apparently wrote "Rape Me" as a life-affirming anti-rape song. He was at some point quoted as saying "It's like she's saying, "Rape me, go ahead, rape me, beat me. You'll never kill me. I'll survive this and I'm gonna fucking rape you one of these days and you won't even know it."" So there you go. Although that i like to think that when he sings "i'm not the only one", he's saying that he knows there are others who see the world as he does. |

I can really only give meaning to the chorus ("i miss the comfort in being sad"). In lots of cases, happiness for someone who has been sad for such a long time is too problematic, and makes them sadder than they were before, when they accepted and understood their lives. Feeling their original feelings of sadness again could be almost comforting. Hence, "i miss the comfort in being sad." |

I like to think of it being about a guy who is depressed and in love with some girl. He hides his his true personality from everyone else, who think of him as normal like the rest of them ("in their eyes, i was alive/a fool's disguise"). He wants to feel better, but he's stopped from doing this because of his love for the girl, which isn't reciprocated, contributing to his depression ("yeah i want something new/but what am i supposed to do about you?") Things could be better for him if he didn't have to see her on a regular basis ("take me away from you"). He's also annoyed at himself for all the false promises he made to himself to do something about it ("shame my tongue/fat with promise all along"). He's tired of his life ("life's a bummer/when you're a hummer/life's a drag"(a "hummer" being someone who drifts through life with no real purposes or goals, prone to daydreams, humming etc.)). He also knows how hard it is to become happy - after so long being sad, it takes ages for you to be truly at peace, which is enough to stop others from even attempting to be happy ("happiness will make you wonder/will i feel ok/it scares the disenchanted/far away") He ends by wondering whether the girl he loves truly loves him back ("do you feel/love is real?") |

Sounds to me like the song is about someone who's always looking for bigger and better things ("and i want it all/thought i got it all/then i finally saw/and found out where it's all at"). The verses reinforce this. Also the line "memories cut in half" makes me think that he's only choosing to remember the memories which remind him of how crappy his life was before his current situation. For example - he lives a certain way, then he finds out that it's not cool/the way he wants to live etc. anymore, so he quickly lives life this new way, and brands his past life situation/s as shit. |

Pretty simple. I think it's about a guy who's tired of his shitty life (bowing down to others for example - "too many people stepping over me", and being insecure etc. - "i don't really know who i am") and wants to finally change it for the better ("it's time for me to take a stand" and "all i want is a little of the good life"). However in the bridge it looks like after experiencing some of "the good life" he's beginning to doubt if it's as desirable as he first thought (i always wanted it this way/i never wanted it this way"). |

| The Smashing Pumpkins – Behold! The Night Mare Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think this song is about Billy trying to cope with loving someone ("pulled down the heavens just to please you/appease you") who he knows deep down is not as he sees her at all, that she's changed somehow from what she once was (as though her former self has died - "i can't go on/digging roses from your grave"). As a result he shouldn't love her anymore but he can't help it, and he suffers because of it ("and the night mare rides on"). | |
