So uh... the rest of the song means nothing? Just random words?

Its kinda funny, your saying that its about how people butcher the meaning of songs, but here you are butchering the meaning of this song...

See, I hear:

"It was the RUN of the crowd" You know, like the way everyone else acts...

and

"It was THE LIE when the they smile" Which makes much more sense.

and

"WE GOT THE OBVIOUS TEAM" not 'bring out the old guilotene'. Again, it makes way more sense to me.

If you ask me its him debating wether he should start getting over her, and the "dying" represents what would happen to their possibly new realtionship if he decided to give up.

My Chemical Romance – The Ghost of You Lyrics 15 years ago
Its about someone he loved greatly, but now she doesnt. He still loves her but knows he needs to get over her, and he wants her to love him before he has too. So thats the scenario, but the theme is what would happen, who would she feel, if he were to get over her today, metaphoricaly dying, as the video suggest with all its WWII scenes.

Case in point:

At the end of the world
Or the last thing I see
(Its the end of the world, or at lest seems like it to him)
You are
Never coming home
Never coming home
(Never coming home to him, she will never love him)
Could I?
Should I?
(Could he, should he try to continue to love her, in the hopes she will, or is it time to get over her?)
And all the things that you never ever told me
And all the smiles that are ever gonna haunt me
(If he decided to get over her today, again metaphoricly dying, what would happen to the memories that were, and those that may have been.)
Never coming home
Never coming home
Could I?
Should I?
And all the wounds that are ever gonna scar me
For all the ghosts that are never gonna catch me
(Again with the metaphor, all the scars of a lost love and all the memories that he will try to get over)

Well other than that this is just a plain freaking amazing song, great course, and an excellently paired video. Its amazing that considering this is a music video, the entire thing is just as good as, if not better than, some of the best WWII movies made. So yeah, awesome sauce...

I've never seen the actual lyrics, but it sounds like he says: "In regret you may be, its to late to save me", and I know FOR SURE he says "It's too late to save me (And he said) As far as I can tell..." listen, youll hear it.

I know what the lyrics are, there both posted here and in the booklet in the back of the CD I own, but I'm just saying, during the chorus, I, at first, thought I heard:

If
I
Crawl back inside
Sick
By
Love left behind

It makes some sense, but like I said, not what the lyrics are.

Whats interesting is that ClemsonPoker two comments above you said almost exactly the same thing, only he assumed a family member. It seems that most people attempt to interpret songs (especially by Breaking Benjamin) as having to do with dating, or relationships, although the idea of the family member makes much more sense.

Thats an interesting idea, because when you look in the back of the CD booklet, it has a picture of his grandfather, in his army uniform, and dedicates the CD to him. I suspect, as I know others do, that the entire CD may be written ABOUT his grandfather. However, the idea that his grandfather was abusive, while not impossible, seems highly improbable, considering if anyone were to be abusive directly to Ben, it would most likely be his dad, although that does not rule out the possibility that the grandfather was abusive, more knowledge of Ben's life is obviously required to say for sure(e.g. whether he often lived with/visited his grandparents, or if the family tried to avoid them). Another reason I can come up with is that the picture of his grandfather in the CD, as I've said, has him smilying pleasently and handsomely while posed in his army uniform. Not exactly the image I would pick to portray someone who abused me, although Ben could have his own reasons.

I don't know where people are getting "I said I wasn't mad" from, it says the other above, and in the song booklet. It would also make more sense with the "I am nothing less" because without "A shadow of a man" we can't tell what he's refering to.

Breaking Benjamin – Evil Angel Lyrics 15 years ago
Its not that far-fetched, and it doesn't have to be about Christianity's early years, or Christianity at all, it could be about any religion that has been persecuted at any time in history; other than "driving the nail" there is nothing to sugest a connection to any specific religion. But using Christianity as an example, I have a few ideas about your explanation.

"Nothing but lies and crooked wings"
I don't think it refers to traitors inside the religion, I think it refers to the world around them. From their point of veiw, all the other pagan religions around them were outright lies, and violated their first commandment (The Lord is your God, thow shalt have no gods before him) Also, I believe you have a misinformed opinion on Judas, but thats a seperate comment.

"Don't leave ... Remember, remember."
He could be praying to God, in which case "remember" is him begging God to remember the covenants and promises he's made. Or he could be talking to his fellow belivers, in which case "remember" is him begging his fellow belivers to stand with him through times of trouble, to "remember" what they believe in.

"Evil Angel"
I don't think hes worshiping a demon, it doesn't fit with the theme of him worshiping God, I think the "Evil Angel" part, refers to how much trouble his religion brings him, "Put me to sleep" is like hes saying, just spare me the suffering, "Open your wings" is like opening his wings to protect him, and sheild him, "Fly over me" is where the "Evil" is emphasized, because he wants the "Evil" that comes with this religion to pass him over, and why can't I breathe is his feelings of being under so much pressure from persecution.

I think the in the second verse is where it starts to focus on betrayers, as indicated by "hiding betrayl" but that only refers the traitors that are otherwise hidden by their supposed alliegance. Driving the nail has nothing to do with Christianity, it refers to the driving the nail thats slowly killing off Christianity, pressuring those who believe in it.

So, like I said nothing to directly refer to Christianity, could be about any religion, but I like your idea on persecution.

Yeah, its not that hard to hear him screaming, but "Up" is such a simple word, its kind of hard to tell what hes saying, never thought about it, and if I did I don't think I'd be able to hear it.

Breaking Benjamin – Blow Me Away Lyrics 15 years ago
No one seems to agree about the lyrics, Ill enterpret the ones here and show you what I think they are as well, so...

Personally I think this song was custom made to be on the soundtrack for Halo 2, everyone else before me has already explained why this is so, and I can't do it any better, so aside from the Halo 2 theme this song also seems to be about some futile or desperate battle, most people think its about Iraq or some other actual war, but I think here Ben is just refering to a battle, what that battle is is left to the listener to decide, it doesn't even have to be a war, it may be somebody battling cancer (that was just an example, I don't honestly believe this song is about cancer) Whatever the battle is it is a group battle and written from the point of veiw of one of the leaders (that explains the "we" and "us" used often in the song, and some of the instructions he gives makes him a leader). But the song is not directly about the battle, its about the final decission he has to make in the battle. Read my explanation to find out what that is.

They fall in line
One at a time
Ready play
(I can't see them anyway)

*This has almost like a "Ok, were ready, let's roll" theme to it, who it refers to, his men or the enemy I don't know, but it seems like the enemy because its sent almost as a warning, or a threat, its something he knows is happening but can't see (hints the last part) but the addition of "anyway" makes it seem like he doesnt care and just wants to gt it over with, like he nkows ho its going to end.

No time to lose
We've got to move
Steady your helm
(I am losing sight again)

*This makes it seem like a very improtant mission, they need to go now, and they need to make sure their going to get the job done when they get there, thats the steady your helm part. But the I'm losing sight again sounds as if hes rushing into this to much, and geting to anxious, like he needs to calm down and just focus.

[Bridge]
Fire your gun,
It's time to run,
Blow me away.
(I will stay, in the mess I made)

*Now its go time, I think he actualy said "guns" like as in plural, but either way hes giving orders, I dont know whether hes saying "mess I've made" which sounds like hes going back in to fix his mistakes or "unless I may" so like if he is allowed, and welcomed to stay he knows he is needed else where, I personally think its the second one, but I can't tell.

After the fall,
We'll shake it off,
Show me the way.

*Notice how he doesn't sya "now that we've fallen" he knows hes screwed, but isn't fretting it, hes just still focused on the mission at hand and is trying to reassure others that thats all they need to do as well, and hes trying to reassure someone who isn't as sure like "We both know you can do it, now show me!"

[Chorus]
Only the strongest will survive,
Lead me in heaven when we die,
I have a shadow on the wall,
I'll be the one to save us all.

*I think the unspoken part of the first line is "... will survive, and we are the strongest" he knows there the best, and they can do great wit his leadership, but the second line once again says, WHEN we die, like he knows hes going to, which tells us what the "Shadow on the wall" (I think its I'm a shadow) means, that although hes the one you never see coming, the shadow on the wall, he also is just one man, and wont change anything major, hes just a shadow. The last line sounds sacrificial, like he knows he can live up to what his men expect of him, even if it will change nothing, but he will have to sacrifice himself.

There's nothing left,
So save your breath,
Lying in wait.
(Caught inside this tidal wave)

*With the second verse, the theme changes a little, thier situation becomes darker. All the bolstering retoric, the pre-game pep talk, and motivating famous last words are gone, its now life or death, so save you breath, dont bother trying to act tough, or macho, or assure everyone that everythings going to be alright, because this is it, the final showdown, and they know how its going to end, in defeat, so now hes just lying in wait, waiting for the defeat thats coming. The last line also supports this, I mean think about it, what can you do to stop a tidal wave mother nature's most destructive weapon? Jack Crap. Hes in a hopelessly dooming situation, and knows that no matter what he does, he can't change it, yet hes caught in it, he cant get out because to finish and loose is his duty.

Your cover's blown,
Nowhere to go,
Holding your fate.
(Loaded I will walk alone)

I think here it skips foward a little, hes watched his comrades fall around him, now all the support and "brotherhood" I guess you could say, that hes relied on for cover, to reasure himself that although their doomed, their doomed together, is gone, hes alone, he has "No where to go" but straight foward or back. Before back wasn't an option, because he had to lead his men, he had their respect to live up to, but now that their all dead, he can make any decision he wan'ts without fear of shame, he and he alone is holding his fate. It kind of doesn't tell you what he decides, as there are no more verses that would give us a hint, and all the other lyrics could go either way, even the last line, which at first thought sounds like hes loaded his gun and is facing the enemy, could be seen as him retreating. "Loaded I will walk alone" he still has amo in his gun, he never fired, and hes walking back alone.

[Bridge]
Fire your guns,
It's time to run,
Blow me away.
(I will stay, in the mess I made)

After the fall,
We'll shake it off,
Show me the way.

[Chorus]
Only the strongest will survive,
Lead me in heaven when we die,
I have a shadow on the wall,
I'll be the one to save us all.

Wanting it back
(Don't fight me God!)

*Which ever decision he made, he takes it back, either he choose to fight and realizes how screwed he now is, or he is retreating, but although his teamates aren't watching him, that doesn't mean he doesn't have to live up to them, so now he wants to go back. We can't tell which, but we can observe he says "wanting" not going back, so hes made his decision and its to late. The second and last line his him crying out to God, "Why?!" He has been faced with the toughest decision any man can make, and each choice was wrong, he feels as if God himself is against him.

(Here I come! (held out for about 2 seconds))

*Most people would say "Like you said, he can't take back his decision, so hes not turning around from a retreat, so that means hes saying 'here I come *Insert Enemy name here*', so he decided to take them on." but if you ask me hes saying here I come fate, hes made his decision, he can't go back and so now he has to accept his decision and keep going. Also, he could be talking to his comrades as he ascends to the "heaven" he has refered to in the courses. But how he got there, killed in the same battle, or live to fight and die another day, remains unsaid.

(Die! (held out for about 5 seconds))

*Here we can probably assume that he is yelling at his enemy, as he charges them, so he decided to stay. But he could also be cursing his enemies as he walks away, or cursing himself for whatever decission he made.

[Chorus]
Only the strongest will survive,
Lead me in heaven when we die,
I have a shadow on the wall,
I'll be the one to save us all.

Save us all!3x

So obviously which path he took remains unsaid, its up to the listener to decide that. So, which path did he choose?

I appreciate that you don't claim to know exactly what the song is about, because, and this in turn is just my opinion, although you have the right idea about the song, it seems like you don't know much to back it up with, maybe you've beat both the Call of Duty Modern Warfares on "Super Hard" or something, please don't tkae offense it just seems to me you knowledge isn't well founded. I don't pretend to have any more first hand knowledge of the subject, but I can point out a few things I know for sure are wrong, like your idea about the soldier with the map "showing the way", in modern combat (I'm assuming thats what you refering to here, because with the "checkpoits you mentioned and a pre-set base camp, it sounds like patrol in Iraq or somewhere) any way, in modern combat most soldiers already carry an old fashioned paper map, and most have a computer map thats part of the "Land Warrior" combat computer system, thats the one thing I'm sure aobut. Also, and this is where I'm a little less sure, in modern urban, house to house fighting, trenches aren't used often, probably simply because a trench system usually is designed to hold of enemies comming from one side, and in urban combat its to likely that you will be attacked from many sides. Aside from those particular points, your entire story about this squaed leader seems to be a little "custom taylored" to the lyrics, it sounds like you made up this entire story just to perfectly fit the lyrics, that is it doesn't seem to be the "average" description of combat.

I do agree on some points though. The song does seem to be about combat (obviously)and does seem to be written from the point of veiw of a leader, what level of leader is debateable, but he sure doesn't seem to be a general or another high-ranking officer, but to say hes a squad leader can't be proved, he could lead a platoon, possibly even a company, or he maybe a low ranking soldier, but one who holds the full respect of his comrades and does help lead his unit on a certain level. It seems to be about a far more futile and desperate mission than a simple combat patrol in Iraq though.

PS, just wondering, what sort of experience with the modern battlefield do you have? As I have said, I don't have any either, so this isn't some kind of a challenge, but I'm just interested.

Breaking Benjamin – Rain Lyrics 15 years ago
Rated plus one for originality, I like the way your interpreted the opening lines, but I think its a little one sided to insist that this song is ONLY about actual rain and nothing else. True thats obviously the title of the song, but the verses are so inspecific that you can't really determine what exactly its about. It leaves alot of room for interpretation. I understand what you meand when you say that although he is really talking about rain, and nothing else, he is using it as metaphor or symbol for other things that are on his mind; but you seem to use the idea of metahpors so much in this song, but ignore the idea that the entire song is a metaphor for something else, and that no parts of the song are exclusively about rain. Forgive me, I'm playing Devil's Advocate here, the more I type and thnk about your interpretation, the more I think you might be right.

Breaking Benjamin – Rain Lyrics 15 years ago
Love this song, puts me to sleep half the time I listen to it. The songs tone perfectly matches the rain going on in the back ground. Something about rain has that calming effect. Honestly, based on the lyrics, its probably about a relationship; but the things I thing I think of when I hear it is life, and how we are always searching for something better than where were at now, and were never truly happy. But maybe I'm being overdramatic and reading into it to much, maybe its just about wanting to find something better at the end of a long unhappiness. I don't know, I'm getting sleepy just thinking about it.

Breaking Benjamin – I Will Not Bow Lyrics 16 years ago
If this song is about his death due to a drinking habit hes already kicked, which I think the whole album Dear Agony is, than this should support it.

Now the dark begins to rise- He's found out hes going to die (In track 01, Fade Away) and now hes gotten over the shock and realized it.

Save your breath its far from over- He's in for a long, hard battle before he dies

Leave the lost and dead behind- He's decided, screw the people I hurt with my alcholism, they've abandoned me even after I sotpped, all that matters is me.
Nows your chance to run for cover- Looking out for him self will give him some comfort, or cover.
I don't want to change the world- He doesn't wan't to make ammends
I just want to leave it colder- He's going to take revenge on those who left him, it doesn't say how but I think possibly by starting to drink agian.
Light the fuse and burn it up- He's going to start and not stop, burn up what he has left of a life
Take the path that leads to nowhere- His drinking will only lead no where

All is lost again- Hes an alchoholic again.
But I'm not giving in- Hes going through with his choice
I will not bow- Hes not going to stop drinking
I will not break- And again, the same point
I will shut the world away- Hes not going to listen or care how bad people think this choice is.
I will not fall- Hes not going to deviate from his decision
I will not fade- And the same point again
I will take your breath away- His choice is absolutely unthinkable to those he loves.

Watch the end from dying eyes- He know hes going to die but doesn't wan't to be sober enough to tell, dying eyes is not literaly saying hes dying, but that sense of it, his eyes, are.
Now the dark is taking over- His drunkenness is blotting out his pain, the dark is a good thing.
Show me where forever died- When did this star, when did his life that he took for granted end?
Take the fall and run to heaven- He just wants it to be over with.

And I'll survive paranoid- Hes going to survive the pain, not death, but the pain that comes wiht it, hes going ot outsmart it. And hes constantly paranoid that if he doesn't drink, hell feel the pain.
I have lost the will to change- Hes settled back in to drinking agian, and because of it, can't stop, even though he knows he should.
And I am not proud- He now confirms he know this is wrong.
Cold blooded fate- What a way to die, to kick a habit, only to have it kill you while you start it agian.
I will shut the world away- Hes going to shut the pain, and all those who tell him not to away.

Breaking Benjamin – Fade Away Lyrics 16 years ago
The death idea makes sense, especially with the alchoholism theory. The reason I say this is that for a while I was wondering why its said "I live for those I lost along the way" because if he was dying from a disease he wouldn't have lost anyone else. Unless the lost ones were those he forced away with his alchoholism, those who left him because he couldn't break the addiction. He lives, and breaks his addiction, for them, the ones he lost along the way, to show them he's changed. This song, and the feeling it gives of being left behind fit with him finaly finding out hes going to die, he would start thinking about all the negatives, who hes lost because of a habit hes finaly kicked but will kill him any way, about how anything else doesn't matter because the fact that he's going to die, and apparently suffer, is the bottom line.

Guns N' Roses – Civil War Lyrics 16 years ago
Civil War refers to the "Civil War" that divided America all those years ago. DUH! Now that we got that out of the way, the orginal war was between the two halves of our country, and people thought that because the country was fighting itself the war would be "Civil", or peaceful. In the same way humanity is fighting itself, and in the same way the wars are never "Civil". Slickvic was the first one to nail it right on the head, everyone else was hitting around it, but didn't quite get the point. It helps when you have some vocabulary and a little history knowledge don't it? The rest of the song is pretty much self-explanitory, and brings to bear all the horrors and tragedies in our "Civil War". On a good day this song will make me teary, just awsome, this is GNR at some of their best!

LOL! I like how all you guys are reading so deeply into this, its just a bunch of screamed words, thrown in with some rocking guitar, invented for no reason in particular and thought up in a Sharpie induced high. If you read the description on Guitar Hero the dude just started screaming the lyrics while making eggs or something. It still rocks! Love the song! To bad they don't sell it one iTunes =(
