Personally I detest this song. It seems so serious and to convey such a deep meaning and yet as the comment from Aenima21 shows even Collins himself seems to have no idea what it is about.
All it conveys to me is a mood of vindictive revenge as though Collins is trying to use his 'Superstar' status to bully someone he feels has wronged him in the past. Sometimes ambiguity in artistic expression can be a good thing, but in this song I think it is just plain nasty. |

Thanks to all those who have provided the incredible interpretations and information about this song in the previous comments. I feel I have gained some real insight from reading what people have said. The only thing I can think of to add is in the verse about the Titanic and people shouting 'Which side are you on?' - I had heard/read somewhere that this was a reference to the Stewards on the deck of the Titanic telling all the passengers on the deck to move from one side to the other of the ship because they believed it would counteract the effect of it capsising! Also there is a popular saying/idea that likens pointless activity as akin to moving the deckchairs about on board the Titanic when the ship is about to go down. |

I think neenzabeen is on the right track with respect to the meaning of this song. To me it seems to have an ironic or double meaning. On the one hand Kelly Jones thinks the cab driver is an ignaramous who is giving him a hard time when he is on holiday but on the other the things he says to him make such an impression that he has to write a song about it. The easy listening, sugary sweet sound to the song belies the powerful message that is contained in the lyrics. It's like a confession from the singer that there may be some truth in what the cab driver is saying, and it is a wry comment on human nature that we all tend to choose the easy option in life sometimes rather than exploring an alternative that may be more difficult and challenging.
