The Beatles – Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds Lyrics 11 years ago
@[Sergio:1234]- Even the song you reference is not about what it seems. CCR was from the San Francisco area, where psychedelic music and such bands were big. But CCR wasn't like those kinds of bands in that regard and Fogerty has said the few times he smoked pot he didn't like the feeling of being out of control. If anything, that song (Lookin Out My Back Door) is poking fun at drug inspired songs.

wisconsin- why would the opinion of the website be of any greater value? Be a detective, the meaning of this song is not hard to figure out- especially since Lennon has talked about it. Look up what he has said. For some dweebs in computerland they need the song to be about a certain something in order for it to be cool or hip, thus the insistence over drug meanings. The song is definitely psychedelic, but a song doesn't have to be about drugs specifically to be so. I take Lennons word for what the song is about and how it came to be written, all the while realizing he was no stranger to taking psychedelic drugs at that time.

rino- here's something to consider numbnutz: 50 years later they still sell millions of records worldwide every year. They have been listed as a prime influence of well known bands past and present. They created production techniques on equipment that pales in comparison to todays technology yet still inspires and sounds great. Their songs are classics that will be listened to 100 years from now. You have your opinion and it is weak and incorrect in places. They got big and famous because they were good. Real good. Opinions such as yours are bland, dull and ridiculous. Now reply to this with expletives and more of your in depth logic. That's about what I'd expect.

Stone Temple Pilots – Wonderful Lyrics 16 years ago
He knows she will soon be with someone else ("Know you'll be safe but not alone") while he is alone. As time goes on the feelings will subside ("As I'm fading out..Think I'm movin' on"). One of the greatest songs ever about regret, and realizing too late how wonderful someone was.

Obviously the Beatles were no strangers to psychedelics by the time Lucy was written, but they have always been pretty honest and straightforward about song meanings and how certain songs came to be written. Great songwriters like Lennon and McCartney can take inspiration from almost anything and convert it to a great song. Lennon wrote "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite" based upon on old circus poster he came across. He wrote "A Day In The Life" from events he read in the newspaper. Both are trippy "drug" songs without actually being about drugs. And so it is with "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds"- based upon his sons drawing. Lennon has maintained from day one the inspiration for the song. Everything the band wrote was examined and amplified to the extreme. Lucy is an Alice in Wonderland story and is in fact based upon a real girl who was a friend of Julian Lennon and who passed away fairly recently. The song is drenched in psychedelia and I do believe was written under the influence of drugs or at least a recent drug experience. However, I believe the L.S.D. coded in the title was a great coincidence, Lennon has said so repeatedly. Even if the BBC was banning some of their songs from the radio, they were still the BIGGEST band in the world and could do whatever they wanted to musically.

Stealers Wheel – Stuck In The Middle With You Lyrics 16 years ago
This is what the song is about- and it comes from the liner notes of RIGHT DOWN THE LINE- the Best of Gerry Rafferty cd. The song is referring to people in the record biz- management people and executives of record labels- they are the clowns and jokers referred to in the lyrics. If you know about Gerry Rafferty you know he has had major issues with the record biz all his life. The band (Stealers Wheel) was signed to their label and attended a signing party at a fancy London restaurant. Rafferty described the scene as like "the Last Supper", with everyone sitting around a long table. The song is about the weasels in the record industry, the guys (band) getting drunk, and trying to get out of the entire thing- which they detested. That is the gist of what the song is about.

Steely Dan – Ida Lee Lyrics 16 years ago
Donald Fagen had a song on his solo album, The Nightfly, titled "New Frontier"- about the Cold War and a party in a fallout shelter. I think "Ida Lee" was the first attempt at this same theme. The bit about opening up the air shaft leads me to this conclusion, as well as the fact that many very early Becker/Fagen songs used phrases and themes that were later recycled on other songs. Even the word "skyway" on "Ida Lee" was later used on Fagens song, "Trans Island Skyway".
