To me, this song is about moving on, emptiness and looking back at an old love. He's in a relationship, but remembers someone he loved before. Perhaps someone who inspired him, perhaps a volatile relationship. There's longing, he feels empty. Maybe he's unable to love someone after what happened to him before, 'Nothing to signal out when I can't be with you' 'You wore me down. Worse, did I show.' Now he's moved on into this new relationship but is struggling to 'find himself' in it. He's not with his old love and finds it hard to know what to do, how to act. This new person is just 'this girlfriend', another girl to him, not his old love. He finds it hard to feel things for this new person, it seems pointless, perhaps because of hurt he suffered in his old relationship or the longing he still feels 'How should I hold this girlfriend? As tight as I ever could? Now, why should I? He lacks this connection with the new person, he isn't sure how he should feel, it doesn't come naturally, 'Sometimes we've got nowhere to be. Nothing to talk about. And nothing to agree on.' He's longing for something real, something 'true', his old love, something to take him out of this apathy, 'Show me something good. Show me something.' No reason why.' 'If it is just a bed, then why the ringing sound?' This bit's kinda odd, I took it to mean that the bed he shares with his new 'love' is really 'just a bed', a piece if furniture. It's not a symbol of their relationship, their togetherness. But he's aware that this isn't right, he's hearing alarm bells. Did anyone get this feeling from the song? |
