I'm pretty sure it's "ABSENCE without leave" and "What's my mission? Whose my MASTER?" |

| Kerli – Goodbye Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| This is such a simple yet beautiful song. Knowing Kerli's philosophy from many of her videos, I believe she is addressing the whole idea of her soul being an old soul. She's been put on Earth to do something, and although she loves it here, she doesn't quite feel like she belongs. She states that if she should ever "feel like going home," should she ever want to leave Earth to return to the origin of her soul she'd jump so she "could fly. Basically she's saying that if she wanted to end her Earth life she'd do it by jumping off of something high up so she her soul could fly away in the air before her body returns back to Earth. The reason she says "don't get emotional" is because she doesn't want anyone to mourn over her, because she will be leaving a world of dark and conflict for a place of light and peace. It's kind of a morbidly beautiful view of the song, but that's what I got out of it | |
| Angelspit – 100% Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I don't understand why everyone is so obsessed with the cannibalism bit, when it only appears in the last verse of the song. Yes it's a big part of the song but it's not what the song is as a whole, so you can't say "this song is obviously a metaphor for cannibalism" because they use cannibalism as a metaphor to stress another point in the song. The song is actually formatted like a "five paragraph essay" if you will. In the first verse they bring about the point that we are brainwashed and are a herd of sheep/cattle that have been branded by corporations with slogans such as "Happy Meal." Basically we are owned by them Then they talk about how we are being brainwashed both by media and by religion, and that both outlets are being used to gain control of us. Then in the third verse they continue the point that the "church" owns us with allusions to heaven (the great place we'll end up if we follow "God's" rules) and ribs (In the creation story Eve was created out of Adam's rib i believe). Throughout in the chorus when Destroy X is talking about the how "you" should trust her when she says she needs surgery, she's saying that our trust in the corporations is what allows them to take control of our minds. In the last verse the Angelspit uses cannibalism as a metaphor for how the corporations feed off of us. When we are brainwashed and sedated it is easier for them to take advantage of us, take our money, and "eat us alive." The whole 100% part of the song makes me think of when something loads on your computer. It starts at 0% and then works itself up. So basically they are saying that we are computers and the brainwashing virus that "the man" has installed into all of us has been 100% transferred and there is nothing we can do about it. I mean I could be wrong about some things, but I overall that's what I got from the song. |

| The Pretty Reckless – Goin' Down Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I LOVE this song. It is just so fun. I think the meaning is pretty straight forward. She killed her ex cause she was sleeping with another girl, and then regrets it afterward because she releases that he was the best guy she's ever slept with. She goes to confession offers the priest a trade. If he saves her soul she will have sex with him. And might I add I love the double meaning of "Goin' Down". One is "Goin all the way down to hell" and the other is....well i let you figure that out for yourself I love how Taylor pokes fun at the Catholic Church so artfully. First with this song and then when she plays a slutty version of Mary Magdalene at the Last Supper. It's hard to believe she's only 17 |

In an interview they did on the song and the music video, they said that the song is about losing a loved one and basically losing your mind afterwards I didn't really get that from the song then. I agree more with the comments stated above saying that the song meaning is somewhat similiar to that of Makes Me Wanna Die. Giving your all to a person who just ends up leaving you in the end. That's probably mostly because before I saw the lyrics I thought she was saying "And as I watch you disappear into the CROWD," but in all the lyric sites i've been to it says ground. Oh well |

| Loreena McKennitt – Full Circle Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I was really surprised at the lack of comments on this song. This is probably my favorite Loreena McKennitt song after her version of The Highway Man. I always put it on when I just need to chill out and be at peace. When I looked at these lyrics I immediately got a sense of a comparison going on between two cultural groups. I feel that McKennitt is trying to promote religious tolerence in this song in such an artful and captivating way Here's how I broke it down: It's known that McKennitt likes to mix both celtic and middle eastern music, so I got out of it that she is comparing Islam and Christianity, two major religions that have been in major conflict throughout the years. First she talks of someone chanting at sunrise (which if I'm not mistaken is a tradition in Islam) and see then says "Somewhere the sun rose, o'er dunes in the desert" which puts my mind in the middle east geographically. Then in the following verse she says "Elsewhere a snowfall, the first in the winter" which makes me think of Europe, where Christianity was very prevalent around the times of the Crusades. She also refers to bells and robes which again makes me think of Christianity. She says that both the person in what is assumed to be the middle east tand the person it what can be assumed is Europe are singing to and calling to a god. The fact that she uses the possessive "your" before god also establishes a difference between the gods. Although she sets up this contrast she also uses a linking force as well she I believe makes this song all the more powerful. She asks both people (assuming that "you" refers once to the middle eastern person and next to the european person separately) "in your heart, in your soul, did you find peace there" It is this one line that links the two different religions together. McKennitt, in my inturpertation is basically saying this: You both worship your god and you both have a common goal: to find peace within yourselves and with your god. If you are so similar why are you fighting? I even feel that this message can be extended to a tolerance of all religions different from your own. Overall a beautiful song with a beautiful message :D |

| Amanda Palmer – Runs in the Family Lyrics | 15 years ago |

well i don't think it's just "slutiness" she's talking about. I think it goes deeper to something such as sex addiction. Which is an actual disorder that could stem from emptiness and neglect caused by a dysfunctional family. So I think she might be refering to two seperate disorders. The physical one: Hemophilia and the mental one" sex addiction She might be using the fact that since hemophilia is a disorder that runs in the family, maybe her other disorder (sex addiction) is genetic as well. |

| Amanda Palmer – Runs in the Family Lyrics | 15 years ago |

"My friend has problems with winter and autumn. They give him prescriptions, they shine bright lights on him. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it, but sometimes you're born with it." I think PantherPanther best describes this verse: "I think Amanda may be referring to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD); depression caused by lack of sunlight. People with SAD are usually affected the worst during winter in autumn, and are usually given treatment for it by shining a specially designed lamp into the person's eyes" "My friend gets frights he gets shakes in the night and they say that there's no way that they could have caught it in time takes its toll on him. It is traditional." Maybe she's refering to a genetic mental disorder that induces nightmares and that if caught early it can be cured, but if not, nothing can cure it. "My friend's depressed, she's a wreck, she's a mess. They've done all sorts of tests and they guess it has something to do with her grandmother's grandfather's grandmother's civil war soldiers who probably infected her. My friend has maladies, rickets, and allergies that she dates back to the 17th century Somehow she manages in her misery." I think that this might refer to syphilis (since it is a STD, it is passed down through the family, and i believe it was very prevalent in the 17th century. If the great great great grandmother was infected by a civil war soldier, than it implies she had sex with this soldier and that's how it came to be in the family). Syphilis not only causes the "maladies and rickets" she talks about, but left untreated can cause "madness" so to speak. Now going to all the parts where Amanda is talking about "herself" in this song. I think "she" is a sex addict (I know people said promiscuity, but promiscuity isn't an actual disorder, sex addiction is) and "she" might be looking at a history of prostitution in "her" family (when "she" says "business runs in the family"). "She" is looking at "her" friends who have both physical and mental disorders that they got b/c of their genetics, and then "she might" be looking at a physical disorder that "she" has in "her" family (like cheapglue said "'We tend to bruise easily. Mad in the blood.'This phrase suggests to me hemophilia, one of the more famously inherited disorders"), and says well maybe this sex addiction is a "mental disorder" that runs in "my" family as well. "Amanda" then deduces that "she" can't run from this sex addiction b/c it's "her" family's fault (much like missrasp said: when we have problems we tend to blame it on other factors when the fault really lies within ourselves. Which prevent us from seeking the help we should be getting) Finally, at the end, we see "her" maybe loosening up on the accusation of the problem being genetic, and comes out with the truth that maybe this IS "my" problem and I need help, but "she" immediately says that if "her" family every found out they'd label her as "crazy", which might be the underlying reason for why "she" was so quick to blame "her" family in the first place. This is only based on loose information that I've heard, so I might err in some places, but I'm sure for an interpretation such as this my information is pretty sound if not completely accurate. And If you're wonder the reason why i put "Amanda" "she" and "her" in quotes is b/c often when artist use the first person, it doesn't always mean they are referring to themselves. Most people already know this, but I felt like I should use quotation marks anyway. |

| William Control – Strangers Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
For some reason the line "where have you been?" gives me the impression that the two "strangers" aren't strangers at all. She was waiting for him to pick her up. I think that they know each other, but for this one night they are playing the part of strangers. Maybe it's even a sexual role play. It also may imply that even though they know each other, they are still emotionally strangers. Or maybe they are so freaky and out there they are strange to everyone around them. Tey are compatible in their bizzarness. Compatible in the fact that they hate this world and they want to die. Strangers kind of gives me a Marylin Manson vibe from the lyrics (I'm in no way saying Control and Manson are copies or what not though). The "If I Was Your Vampire" song comes to mind. How Manson described "Vampire" I find is also very fitting for this song: it's about loving so much that you want to escape the world together, you do this by killing each other "but I'll kill you first because I don't trust you" This song makes me think that maybe these two planned to die together, but the guy is teasing her saying "you might say you want to die, but I think your lying, so I'm going to kill you first"....after they have sex of course. |

| Florence + the Machine – Cosmic Love Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I first heard this song on youtube around a time when I was going through a really hard time. I was in love with this guy who didn't want anything to do with me past friendship. I tried getting over him countless times, and countless times I thought I had, but whenever another relationship with different guys didn't work out this one guy and what happened there would always come back to me. Like it represented all my failures. So this song meant alot to me, and it still does. I mean when I first heard it it brought me to tears because not only the lyrics in the song reflected my emotions but just the sear rawness and power in her voice and the music it's self. I've gotten over him now, but whenever I'm down and out when it comes to relationships (which seems to happen much to frequently to me....sometimes it seems like I'm the only one that has a heart) Florence's Cosmic Love always seems to pull me through when I just need to release all this raw emotion. |

| Florence + the Machine – Howl Lyrics | 15 years ago |

"A man who's pure of heart and says his prayers by night May still become a wolf when the autumn moon is bright" is correct. it's actually a famous quote from the original "Wolfman" movie It talks about how even the greatest hearted man who is the most devoted to god or is the epitome of "good" will turn into a wolf (in the context of the quote it's a werewolf) when the autumn moon (which is a full moon) is bright. So based on that quote alone, she's talking about how her love for her lover turns her into a wolf (a beast/animal) |

| The Cinematics – A Strange Education Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think this song is a statement about love in general. Whether it be romantic with another person, a parent, a brother or sister, a friend, or whatever. It's about the turbulent relationship that love is. One minute you have a great relationship with that person, but then you are "cast away" by an action the person does out of love. Another take is that this person is traveling, trying to find his or her place in the world. The "into your arms" could signify that they think they've found somewhere where they culd "lay down there bones" but something happens to cast them away from the place (whether by the environment or their own intuition. The "Strange Education" symbolizes love or finding ones self. |

| The Birthday Massacre – Violet Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I absolutely adore this song. I was reading some of the other inturrpertations and I found them really interesting, but I still am set on my own. I agree with MidnightChaos that the line "The tragic comedy divine" reminds me of The Divine Comedy, but I felt that it was referring to life (you could then continue to say the life is hell, but that's a whole different dicussion that i don't really want to get into). I really think this song screams young or "puppy" love, or maybe could even be the voice for all the passionate romantics out there. Cause I mean think about it: "The tragic comedy divine Paints the way to peace of mind, Leaving shallow lovers far behind." This could be inturrperated as all the things we go through in life, be it good or bad, shape us to be not as emotional as we are when we are younger. The feelings that we thought were deep were actually shallow and we see that now "Past uncertainties combine, Bringing tears to sleepless eyes. Memory runs the course of time." When you're a teenager you're unsure about a lot of stuff: your future, who you are as a person, what is right, and love. This confusion can keep you up at night trying to riddle everything out, and the inability to would bring you to tears. "Blood runs cold beyond The violet prison for violent visions. And so the broken record plays, As you throw us away." "Violet" in color meanings stands for purpose, so "violet prison" could be the expectation that adults and others have for you, or even social expectations (where you fit in in school and such) that you are sort of locked into. Sometimes all this pressure might lead to thoughts of suicide: "violent visions.""broken record" could represent a repeated cry for help that is repeatedly denied or "thrown away" because it's 'typical' of what adolesence go through, and is therefore more likely to be ignored. "We're never enough. We're drowning in cliches. So desperate to love, We're twisting every word they say. So we sleep through the days." Again "we're never enough" speaks of the inability to fill what is expected of us (from getting the good grade and making the football team to not fitting the conformity of clics). "We're drowning in cliches" talks again of the "typical" adolesnent drama that is gone ignored. "So desperate to love" could be an almost sarcastic statement that would reflect adult's views of teenagers being so in love that they'd do anything for their bf/gf or even are so desperate for a bf/gf and will die if they don't get one. "We're twisting every word they say" might talk of how teenagers tend to find deeper meanings to things that might just purely be surface. "Within the heat of passion's war, Lust is spilled upon the floor, Staining red the wasted metaphor." I find this little stanza is talking purely of romantic situations. Sort of talking of maybe high school relationships and how they seem so passionate, when it's really just the hormones at work, or at least that's what the grown ups tell us. "The selfish need for something more Claws in vain at closing doors." "The selfish need for something more," is pretty straight forward. The whole mindset that 'there has to be something more to life then this small suburban town' that some adults may view as being selfish 'why can't you just be happy with what you have?' deal. Saying that this need "claws in vain at closing doors" suggest that this need is the driving force behind going after opportunity that are 'shut out' due to age restrictions. |

| La Roux – Bulletproof Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I'm going through a situation right now that really relates to this song. How I inturrperted this song was the singer got involved with a guy who was totally ok with physical stuff (kinda like a friends with benefits deal), but the singer thought that something more could and would come out of this and become an actual relationship. I know alot of people inturrperted "dirty words" as being mean things that the guy was saying, but I took it as being sexual stuff the guy was saying. She then realized that all of his words were just so he could get physical stuff out of her. She was wrapped up in loving him, when all he was thinking about was being sexually involved. So now she's getting out of this situation because she realized it wasn't where she wanted to be. I know it says something different in the lyrics here but I always heard one of the lines as "I'm not turned off to love until it's cheap," meaning she has nothing against love until it's only cheap and physical. Now she's saying she'll be bulletproof, as in she's not going to listen to this guys pretty words without knowing his true intentions behind what he's saying. | |
| The Birthday Massacre – Red Stars Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
To me this song screams "communism" (i use quotation marks because the "communism" we know of under Stalin and others isn't actually communism. It's facaded as being so) gone wrong. It's basically bringing attention to how wrong pervious examples of it have been. greater good) Finding what they fail to mention (the people in this society starting to realize that this set up is really benefiting the people controling it, and no one else) Raise your hand to give attention (the "hail hitler" hand gesture comes to mind) It's my red star (this was the known symbol of communist soviet union/Russia back during the Cold War scare) Wasted education celebrating imitation Misplaced admiration. Speaking for a generation.(the youth were brainwashed into thinking that the society was the best thing ever and all opposers to the society (including their own friends and family memebers) |
