This bothers me because it's wrong everywhere I see it... "And potluck is something somewhere that we've never been" is pretty clearly "At a potluck or something, somewhere that we've never been." It sounds like that and it just makes way more sense. |

I have a guitar tab book of a bunch of Dispatch songs, and in the beginning the author of each song explains something about it. This one's from Pete: "'Lightning' is a strange song. It began as a poem about hanging out in Washington Square Park. I wanted to create a surreal journey through a series of images involving drug dealers, chess players, and street performers. I remember an old man mumbling over and over, 'bones of a cat, bones of a cat.' I thought it would be a good line for a song." The lyrics do mostly apply to what everyone has said, it's just a little more specific than some thought. I think it's really using the scene of Washington Square as a representation of urban life, with its "greasy marionettes" controlled by drugs and all the other forces affecting them in the city. |

I've loved this song for quite a while now, but I only realized recently what it means. The verses are still a bit ambiguous to me, but the chorus has a clear meaning... I think there's sort of an implied situation before what is said in the chorus. He's drinking wine (over dinner?) with someone he's known for a while - a close friend, family member, or former girlfriend, I'm really not sure - bust hasn't talked to in a long time. Whoever it is, they complain about the taste of the wine (the same kind they always drink). This is out of character for them, so he thinks to himself, "The bottle of wine was fine this time And I really don't think it's changed The bottle of wine was fine this time. But oh, how I think you've changed." He means that they've become completely different and sort of spoiled, forgetting their past together with him and sort of being happy they've moved on. |
