sorry, just thought of this. he may refer to the girl in the last verse as her sister because both girls answer to the same middleman? maybe, idk, just a thought. and also, this is much more of a stretch, but the broken arm bit may refer to how the girl was literally standing. this goes with my smoking theory, because if you picture a bored girl smoking, what comes to my mind is left arm crossed with the right holding the cigarette. the left arm crossed may resemble an arm in a sling? again, just thoughts |

i'd agree, except for the part in the final verse where he states she was on the phone to the 'middleman' which to me is an obvious reference to a pimp |

to me this song is about how he frequents pubs in search of a prostitute he became infatuated with at first glance. i say this over the ex theory because of the verse that starts "tell me where's your hiding place..." so unless his ex is actively avoiding him, he's referring to someone he does not know that well, or at all. i think we all agree about the chorus being a taxi ride home, about how he doesn't let the driver know the quickest route to his flat so that he can smell her perfume for a little longer and feel close to her. the closeness is obviously a motif here, he touches upon all uses of the word. the first verse referring to appearance, the second referring to similar character, the third to a packed pub (the walls being "moist" due to resonating body heat, and the writing in letraset being necessary due to the amount of people talking at once), and the fourth verse uses the nuance of physical relation, this may mean the whore's literal sister, or just her doppleganger. also, in the fourth verse, a middle man is very similar to a pimp, reinforcing the prostitute theory. as for the "messing with the smoke alarm" i'd suggest he's poetically saying she was smoking a cigarette, the broken arm most likely signifying physical abuse |
