The Shins – Sea Legs Lyrics 16 years ago
I've been saying for a while that this whole album reminds me of a mix between XTC and The Smiths.

Because the pyre represents the old relationship that the singer is moving away from, which he's burning down. A pyre, by the way, is a stack of wood upon which you burn a dead body, so even without my interpretation, a pyre is a fairly cheerless object.

smallgirl, that's exactly the way I interpret the song....perhaps because that's exactly the situation I'm in (I'm in the dead relationship and am about to embark on my first sexual encounter with someone else that I feel very passionate about).

The other weird parallel between the song and my life is that everything that's led me to this other person has been very coincidental and accidental, so the line "Of all the intersecting lines in the sand, I routed a labyrinth to your lap" has a lot of meaning to me.

I've seen different lyrics from these but relistened to the song and the ones "sackofcatfood" posts here seem to match well. The interpretation also makes a lot of sense AND it resonates with what's going on with my life.

I'm in a loveless marriage and am just starting a relationship with someone that I'm considering leaving my wife for.

To me, all the images of death (dead moon, dog under the train, the cheerless pyre - which is used for burning a body in a funeral) represents my marriage, the boat, train and tide represent change, and the sun, moon and fire (implied in the line about the pyre) represent the passion of a new relationship. The sea legs definitely represents the uncertainty of a new relationship.

I love this song...never had any other song speak to me so much as this one and I have to admit it sometimes brings me to tears. It's somehow simultaneoulsy sexy and sad and anxiety producing.
