I know most people consider this a love song but am inclined to disagree. I think it is about a close friend who is going through depression. The reason I feel this way and not that it is a love song is the presence of "we" in the line "here we are to sing you a song". I'm not saying everyone is like me but if I am going to profess my undying love for a girl by singing sweet words outside her window I won't be bringing my friends along. The first verse describes how he misses his friend and the way things were. Also, when depressed, people sometimes do things that push those close to them away. The "where do you run to..." line, I think, illustrates the fact that he doesn't understand what has caused his friend to feel this way. And here we are to sing you a song (narrator and other friends are letting the depressed friend know that they are there to lift his/her spirits)And there you are asleep against the window pane Just like always (shows the realization that it's not going to be easy to help their friend)Said you like to hear the rain sometimes (rain shows sadness and portrays a mood of depression-someone else also mentioned this) And all I can do is tell you the truth, Know my eyes will tell you the same (displays unwavering commitment to helping out the friend) And here we are to sing you a song, And there you are asleep again (they have returned but to a friend in even deeper depression) We grasp our hands, together we feel, We are one result (further display of commitment and tries to say that whatever you're going through we are going to be by your side and help you through and share your pain) |

I think this song is about mankind's reckless pursuit to find meaning in life and in some be more than we reasonably could be. In this search for purpose most people turn to religion. This also satisfies the need to be outstanding because death is no longer the end and personally I don't think you get more epic than being immortal,(see the Highlander-dude kicked ass). I think what Nate is getting at in the lines "the temple is me..." is that we can find purpose in ourselves instead of focusing on external sources. The purpose of the first verse seems to suggest, like others have mentioned, the fear that religion has instilled in us. I especially like the lines "remove the backbone" (common symbol of cowardice) "say hello to sunshine" (parody of enlightenment) Then once we are baptized the "evidence is all we taste". This serves to show how unwillingly most people take criticism of their religious beliefs. "focus on the fiction, lose sight of the mission" either shows how our desire for purpose has led us to be blind followers and our destined to be great attitude is lost, totally defeating our purpose. I also liked the apple idea that someone else posted as a way of showing that we have always desired to do more than what we as humans are capable of. |

| The song is at least loosely based on a book/movie Vampire Hunter D(pretty sure someone else mentioned it in comments as well). In the story Meier is a vampire who falls in love with a human woman Charlotte. In the story he abducts her so that they may run off together. Only to be tricked by a ghost who had been pretending to aid Meier in an attempt to get Charlotte's blood so that she might bring herself back to life. The ghost kills Charlotte and Meier refuses to return the body to her parents(hence stealing her body and taking it home). I'm not sure how all of the rest of the song fit with the story unless it's told from another character's perspective. Some of the lines seem to be slanted more towards describing a situation between the relationship between vampire bounty hunters Leila and D. I know this isn't a very thorough breakdown of the song but I figure it can at least gets you pointed in the right direction | |
