I think that he wasn't the only one to change. They were both probably going to through some things that changed how they were. You can't put the blame on just him. This decision is made by two people, and she does say "You feel the same" which shows that he also thinks she's changed. This song is a better way of breaking up, since neither one of them gets blamed. |

"I don't want to but I have to". Here is where you get to see the regret that she has.She doesn't want to hurt him in anyway, but with breaking up it's impossible not to. Although she knows both of them will be hurt by this, she states "We don't have to be sorry, it just worked out this way". This means that it's neither of their faults and there shouldn't be any regrets at all. They didn't cause the break-up it just happened on its own and everything happens for a reason. The repeating of, "I don't want to but I have to," shows that this isn't something she likes or is fond of. By repeating it, she makes it clear that the last thing she wants is to hurt his feelings.
