Whenever I listen to this song, I imagine it`s early morning and I`ve just woke up in a bus traveling across a desert in the middle of nowhere. It`s been a long lonely journey and I`ve passed the whole night in that bus … and now, drowsy and dream-like, I`m looking at the pale beams of sunrise through my window.

I don`t understand what this all is about! In Beirut songs , the music , the melody , is much much more important than the lyrics. I write it in reply to agree with your last sentence. In such songs , lyrics is nothing but a means to mention the singer`s voice. And the singer`s voice plays the role of an additional instrument. |

This song remembers me of the dark vibe in Tim Burton films; Johnny Depp wearing black, gray paved streets, sad silent people with dark clothes passing by, cold dark colours everywhere. So sad, so haunting. The repeating melody comes back to your mind at the first moments after you`ve just woke up in the morning, when your mind`s quite empty.I love the sigh before "your dry and desperate tongue".
I think it`s partly about giving up your dreams because they`re too weird to be accepted by others. The audience force you to be what you`re not. Then you`ve changed and there`s no way back.You can never be the one you used to be. It`s sad,like being murdered while you`re compeletly innocent. |

Really love everything about Beirut and Zach Condon.Just 3 monthes ago I never thought that once I`m gonna fall in love with brass instruments.I was listening to Radiohead and Bjork and Coldplay and The Strokes and I thought these are everything in music (plus Jeff Buckley and PJ Harvey).And then I heard BEIRUT in "Q&A with Julian Casablancas" and I searched for that and since then I`ve been listening to Beirut non-stop.It`s really amazing to go through the world from Balkan to mexico; from a cold lonely night at the banks of Rhein to a melancholic sunny afternoon in Paris avenues.I really love the vibe. |

It reminds me of "the joke" written by "Milan Kundera".Well maybe because I`m reading the book by now and all my mind is badly stuck with it.But well,leading a life of disappointing thoughts of your future,hard work in a mine and living in almost a prison,and then ignoring this all by loving the most simple girl in the world,is the feeling that both this song and the book are giving me.The hero of the book is passing his worst times of life,rejected by both the university and Communism party,living in a military base and working in mines as his penalty,suffering from all the thoughts and sorrows surrounding his mind,but then he falls in love with some girl he wouldn`t even look at if he was in another time.Some girl that you just care about to forget your dull time,but suddenly you find yourself in love with her,as if she`s the most precious thing you`ve ever had in your life.Just like dancing in a deadly silent place with no music playing around you,as tears are gathering in your eyes but you`re keeping on dancing and dancing. |

Very beautiful song with catchy tune in lots of it`s parts.The lines "and nestle into the ice" and "she`s coming,she`s coming,coming" make me yell like bjork.The first time I listened to it I thought the rythm is like the old pakistani-indian songs.
I think bjork is the one who has always loved the one who goes down the ice crack.He has lost an unfaithful ex on the top of ice and now bjork is talking to him and asking him to wait until she comes underwater,a safe,hidden place for love.Underwater is both where you`re hidden and alone and in peace from betrayers and it`s where you die.I really love this concept.Bjork is talking so eagerly to this guy because she has always thought she will never be with him.He seemed to be so happy with his love;the love that eventually betrayed him.So bjork is going underwater in hope of finding her dream,her love.
Well I think it`s a beautiful idea to go underwater,a lonesom,but safe and hidden place for from everyone else to find your love who has been betrayed.Every time I listen to it,I`m left choking and slightly dizzy:"why it`snot me the writer of this song?" |
