"These chickens are fish in a barrel And the tall one is gonna be for sale" A now departed friend had a theory that this line was a pointed reference to Harvey Danger, and specifically Sean Nelson. Sean was the tallest member of HD, and indeed just tall in general, and in the early 2000's HD was on hiatus with Sean joining TLW. (Hence his linkage to "the tall one is gonna be for sale"....jumping from HD to TLW) So, When I Pretend to Fall was released in 2003. At a TLW show in Chicago circa 2007 he went up to John Roderick pre-show with this theory, and John always playing coy just kind of laughed it off. However, Blue Diamonds was of course a regular part of the set list at this point. He and I score front row standing places for the show, so John def saw us from the start of the set. It's Blue Diamonds time and right as this lyric comes up John stares directly at us with this big sh** eating grin staring right at us and nodding. For my friend, this was all the confirmation he needed. Now, to be fair, John might have been just playing with us....it's not outside of his nature.....we'll never know for sure. |

There are still some question marks here -- but I think this is a closer representation. ----------------- Let em' break your bones He'll drop the sticks and stones Sometimes I'll serve it bloody rare The animals don't care Anymore I'll hang out on this end If it comes to an end Sometime Once and away you go I'll keep it up til away you go It's how I can work it out She'd rather scream and shout This time Don't leave cause you're too good Now won't you cause you couldn't lead Once and away you go I'll keep it up til away you go Cause all I have is what you left behind I'll keep it up til you go away I'll keep it up til you go away Keep it up til you go away Keep it you til you go Cause all I have is what you left behind An empty hand is what you left behind |

Knowing that Ian Thornley wrote most, if not all, of 'In Loving Memory of...' about a girl/bad breakup, my theory doesn't carry much weight. Nonetheless, my first read on this song was that it was about the relationship between band and record companies / management and a sort of tell off to the industry in general. The first two verses deal with the signing -- Fully operational / Don't even have to sell, but transform into dissention internally and from the record company - Someone else's soul / Here to stay...outside and play. The chorus is the difference between the industry and the band. How can they, record companies, offer so much, seem to be so great? (That's how I take the 'feet up off the ground' line) The steal sound line would seem to come from an exec forcing a change on how the band originally looked/sounded. All this while keeping their ears below the ground, so they're literally missing what's actually happening. Well, to all of this, there's a harsh reply of 'Take a look around, look what I've found' which I always took as a cast off of the band/industry interplay in rest of the song to say 'Here we are, we're not like what you're used to' It's probably a bit too of a direct interpretation, but it always seemed to make sense to me. |
