This song is probably about the dissolution of his marriage to Deborah Curtis because of an affair he had with another woman named Annik. He felt obligated to stay with his wife - they had a daughter. She wanted a divorce - he didn't. He tried to stop seeing Annik and asked her to stay away. He was tired of arguing - He was tired of feeling responsible for every thing. He felt horribly guilty. I feel like this song reflects a lot of those emotions and events. *Source: Joy Division Documentary and Deborah Curtis book "Touching from a Distance"* Also: not every Joy Division song is about suicide people. Just FYI. |

*slaps forehead* To everyone who thinks this song isn't about epilepsy. It is. It is about a girl Ian Curtis knew while working for the Department of Disabled Services in Manchester. She had a seizure and died from it. (Source: Deborah Curtis - Joy Division Documentary) Ian had not yet been diagnosed with epilepsy himself at this point. Also: the film "Control" based on Deborah Curtis book "Touching from a Distance" also mentions these facts. And it is not about: Crashing Trains or Cars. Ian Curtis didn't die in a crash. He commited suicide by hanging himself after listening to "the Idiot" - by Iggy Pop. (Source: Wikipedia and Joy Division Documentary) |

IMO: This song is about loving someone but realizing that you never know how much time you'll have with them. Experience has taught you that life is fleeting - and on any occasion you are ready for that loss. (but it is a fallacy in the sense - we never really are) Related: I <3 this song. Also, check out TomAto's Band of Tomatoes - Remix of Band of Horses "Funeral." You can dance while you are crying. |
