Drive-By Truckers – A Ghost To Most Lyrics 13 years ago
To me this song is a general feeling of anxiety, unease and general discomfort with the state of things. The "bones jumping" imagery certainly implies anxiety.

The bridge lyrics about Freedom certainly to point to, as one poster said, dissatisfaction with the American ethos. However I feel the song is more of a general theme than a specific political one.

The line about him being glad his mother died before she could see the current state of things again speaks to the author's general disdain for what's going on around him.

The line that cuts me the most is the "besides you're a ghost to most before they notice, That you ever had a hair or a hide." Thats a look at how meaningless and small life can feel at times. Like little impact you really have in a cosmic sense. like almost all of their songs, it's a bleak affair.

"politically misguided" makes it sound as if politics are objective and Cooley/Hood are clearly wrong. They're artists expressing opinions. Sorry they don't align with yours

One line in particular says to me this song is indeed about yearning for the past. He says

"You could come to me by plane, but that wouldn't be the same
as that old motel room in Texarkana was."

This says to me its about a relationship that only worked under certain circumstances. He's realizing whatever this is isn't going to work and it's purely in the past and that's it. Essentially he's just sort of drifting along in the present. As an earlier line indicates he has no sense of home. Seems like he just has fleeting memories of the past and that's all he has to work with.

Much has been said and I agree with the relationship interpretation. When you go through a break up you look in the mirror and the other person. The first half of the song is him realizing he did some things wrong but the latter is him realizing she really let him down.

The "angels lie to keep control" and "you sold me out to save yourself" hit a personal chord with me. I broke up with a girl and after it was over she started remembering things that didnt happen and revising history. I feel she did it because it made it easier on her to move on and not take any responsibility for our relationship ending. I think this is why Corey said in an interview about this song its about someone who let him down. He learned some things about her after the break up he didnt see while he was in the relationship. Heavy stuff

The Flaming Lips – All We Have Is Now Lyrics 16 years ago
I also see it as a way of recognizing his own doubts and trepidation. His "future self" is telling him whatever he's in is not going to work. Thats really just him recognizing what he already knows but was a little scared to admit. He knows soon it will be over, hence the title. I do think its a little more introspective that previously mentioned

The Flaming Lips – In the Morning of the Magicians Lyrics 16 years ago
Amazing song. I think its about being aware of the forces in life that are greater than you, or at least ones you cant control. Like hes recognizing a love in his life may not work and he realizes sometimes it wasnt just meant to be. The line "I had to surrender/The universe will have its way /Too powerful to master" really sticks with me. He's just sort of accepted, albeit reluctantly, that what he wants just may not be in the cards. Sad.
