I just heard Taylor Swift play a cover of this song. It's a shame it could not have been more popular for BTE, I've already had to correct people that no, Taylor Swift dis not write this beautiful love song, but it was actually Better Than Ezra. People are surprised when they hear that. Anyways, this is one of my top 10 songs that I love and I never get tired of listening to it! |

To me the song is about mental illness. La Cienega means the swamp in Spanish. It's a recurrent battle with depression/obsession/ paranoia or mental illness "La Cienega" . The nightime is always the worst for people with mental illness "oh the night here it comes again". It seems that he is obsessing over something that happened to a little girl. "neither of you really help me to sleep anymore... One breaks my body and the other breaks my soul" refers to alcohol and medications used to treat or self treat mental illness. A common report people say about mood stabilizers are that they change the personality or 'soul.' This often leads people to abuse alcohol which breaks the body. "I raise my glass cause either way I'm dead" says I would rather drink myself to death than take medications that kill my soul. Notice how La Cienega is referred to as an it in the song. Picture La Cienega as an enemy, when you think you have it beat, it smiles and says I'll see you around (you don't have me beat). Anyway you interpret the lyrics, it is just an Awesome song!! |
