It feels to me more of a My Last Duchess meets The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock type of song. He's asking that this woman never change, but it has a slightly darker undertone. When he says "Always reach, but never touch" he's creating a distance between the two of them. It's easier for him to love her when she's objectified as a portrait, and he pleads that she remains this ideal woman. Instead of walking with her "steps...too bold" he wants her to stay on the wall, unaccessible, but also available for him to admire. |
