| Steely Dan – Hey Nineteen Lyrics

I really have rediscovered Steely Dan recently, such wonderful harmonies, lyrics, and music. After reading the lyrics and listening to the song at the same time I think it's sort of a inner dialogue an older man is having with himself as he is becoming infatuated with a younger woman and working on some pickup lines to approach her/ The chorus is then reality setting in, "Hey Nineteen we have nothing in common.." A lot of Steely Dan's songs seem to be reflecting back at life in this way, combined with the melodic nature of their music is really powerful. It's a catchy tune, especially the chorus. |

| Van Halen – House Of Pain Lyrics

Early recording of Van Halen's sci fi-horror epic 'House of Pain', recorded at the Starwood, Los Angeles. This is the original version of the song which was inspired by the 1932 film "Island of Lost Souls" starring Bela Lugosi, and showcases a progressive, radio-unfriendly side of Van Halen that would be abandoned shortly after they signed with Warner Bros, just a few weeks after this recording. The song was then shelved for seven years and when it finally resurfaced on the '1984' album it was extensively rewritten with the sci-fi theme eliminated. Van Halen performed this version of the song in their live sets from about mid-1976 through early 1977, and the intro featured an extended solo by Eddie which eventually became known as 'Eruption'. On this gig Eddie was using a pale mint-green Gibson ES 335 and his white Ibanez Destroyer, neither of which had a whammy bar. For the record, I was at this gig, and no 'strat'' of any kind was used. This recording is a digital transer from the Starwood soundboard master. Apologies--the 'Eruption' intro has not been included in order to accomodate YouTube's time limit.

| Hooverphonic – 2 Wicky Lyrics

The main riff is sampled from a cover by Isaac Hayes of "Walk On By", a song composed by Burt Bacharach, with lyrics by Hal David. In that song the major overtone is love lost/broken heart. I think the references to the Prophet-600 and SH-10151 in the Hooverphonic version are just shut outs to how the Isaac Hayes track was recorded, capturing one of the most soulful rifts ever and expanding on it with galactic imagery, both songs are wonderful |

| Nirvana – Big Long Now Lyrics

The chrous line: "Speaking a phrase...Instantly grown" is a reference to a Super Friends cartoon character in the 1970's named Apache Chief who would utter "Inyuk-chuk" ("Big Man") to grow into vast sizes. The overall mood of song is one of an inability to express ones' self either due to shyness: "I'm not interesting...Shameful as it seems...Can we show our faces now?" or some other social stigma. One of my favorite tracks off "Incesticide". |

| Nirvana – I Hate Myself and Want to Die Lyrics

The song was part of the "Beavis & Butthead Experience" and was initially going to be included on "In Utero" as the last track but was left off because Cobain felt there were too many "noise" songs on the album. "I Hate Myself & I Want To Die" was also the working album title for "In Utero" in the early stages of recording. I think the song is one of Nirvana's simplest and powerful songs. In the end the title was dark foreshadowing of Kurt Cobain's fate. He might have joked about suicide but deep down he was a trouble, brilliant, tortured, young man. |
