As PJH pointed out in a recent Mojo interview, this song was written when she was just 17 and living with her parents in the countryside. I see it as a teenagers view of rejection. Sheela Nah Gig is the name that this "man" (boy) calls the girl. Growing up in the Dorset countryside, Polly and her friends may have been familiar with the gargoyle-like female figures on old churches in the region. Maybe she had heard the name used by locals to denote a supposedly vulgar female. I wouldn't read much more in to it than that. There is a word for men who don't love female breasts and child baring hips. That word is "homosexual" Its not uncommon for gay teenage boys to get a lot of attention from girls. They're trendy, handsome and like to talk etc. If they're not self aware or "out", and back in 1992 that was likely the case, some take advantage of the opportunities presented to try to like girls sexually, but.... when push comes to shove...well, I can imagine it being harsh on the poor girl who doesn't understand why he's not responding the way guys are supposed to. Its a ultimately a hopeful song because in the end, after breast not-liking guy, there's a second man/boy - the "man who cares". He is a Kinsley 0 who will gratefully welcome all the hips and dirty pillows he can get, thank you very much. As for "put money in your idle hole" I have no clue. I thought it was "put money into Idaho". |
