The "spacecraft" could be the news of an affair by his spouse, or perhaps an epiphany that the relationship is over that seemed to come from another world. After the realization the protagonist is left alone with the reality of what has happened and was "left on the ground" alone to ponder the fact. He is asking his new woman, or God, or his own inner self: Will you keep me around Will you help me survive After my time? |

Please ask Neil, I need to pow-wow now. Should it be "Please ask me out, I need to pow-wow now." ? |

| The National – Fake Empire Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I think this song is about falling in and out of love. In the early phases the relationship seems like it will last forever(it wont) and feels almost like a dream, ergo half awake in a semi-dream state, in a fake empire - it is not real and lasting as an empire would be. The last stanza is when it all comes crashing back to Earth. He sees his lover/love affair falling through the sky, a meteor crashing back to Earth (hard to keep track of you falling through the sky). He doesn't want to contemplate it - turn the light out say goodnight -no thinking for a little while. |

I wish they would tour soon. Austin City Limits was a great performance. I would love to see them. |
