I listened to this song closly and after many many time of listening it over and thinking through it hard and when it finally hit me it made me cry. The way I see it is the first verse “Give me your hand The dog in the garden row is covered in mud And dragging your mother’s clothes Cinder and smoke The snake in the basement Found the juniper shade The farmhouse is burning down” The dog is a careless couple of young lovers who are enjoying the early bliss of life and the mud is a symbol of what a persons outlook towards the couple is wrong and sinful too young to feel the way they say they do this person is sybolized by the snake ( a creature that’s sligh and crafty) and the juniper is the town that they might live in , a small town were ethnics and religen are put on top over all else. The line “and dragging your mother’s clothes” is the reputation and good name of the family being soiled by the words of the “snake” and “The farmhouse id buring down” is when the word is beginning to travel from person to person. The next verse “Give me your hand And take what you will tonight, I'll give it as fast And high as the flame will rise Cinder and smoke Some whispers around the trees The juniper bends As if you were listening” The line “take what you will tonight” is the growing love of the couple. The continuance of that “I’ll give it as fast as the flame will rise “ is them trying to live their lifes happily and ignore the horrible lies being spread. And the section “some whispers around the trees the juniper bends as if you where listening” is about the increase of the lies being spread and the pain the familys are going through as the couple denies, but feels themselves being pulled apart And the final verse “Give me your hand Your mother is drunk as all the firemen shake A photo from father’s arms Cinder and smoke You’ll ask me to pray for rain With ash in your mouth You’ll ask it to burn again I think the line “your mother is drunk as all the firemen shake a photo from father’s arms” is about the mothers anger towards the community and the firemen sybolize people helping the mother to get her point across that the couple would have to sperate. The father is relucktante to have to do this to his son/daughter but is finally forced to have to agree and do so The lines “you’ll ask me to pray for rain with ash in your mouth you’ll ask it to burn again” is about on of the two of the couple accepting this but the other not and say that in the end you are going to regret having listen to what people say and wished that if everything was all the same they would do it all over exactly the same |

To me it sounds like, in more than one place, its making a reference back to a Stephen King epic series of storys intitled The Dark Tower. I could be wrong but the thing that pushes me farthest to believe this is: "You heard the world was moving on, World was moving on with you a step behind" this is a strong reference in the books and you would have to read them to understand fully this could also be interpreted as a part of the books: "Demons are at your door. Phantoms inching ever close." |
