I just think the sea is metaphorical for nature and God, in the sense that, When we're having trouble in life, (beleaguered and beset by wind and wave) People have clung to pride and have claimed to have the best ways to live your life, even taking risks (the maps and bravest men) remember people have tried to master life, the way things are but no one has really ever been secure against the problems life gives us, no matter how many people they have backing them up, a ship or a fleet (against the storms). When people have tried to say they know the secret to happiness and claim they have the way to be happy, I've held them down and made them realize there's no happiness without God in your life. (no one masters me) But grace can still be found within the gale(You can be forgiven for the trials and failures of life), with fear and reverence(of God), raise your ragged sail(live your life for him). God loves Thrice, because these lyrics are like crack to my ears. |

Well personally, I think the Wolf is our own personal temptation, and the lion is sin. Satan of course is the king of lies and he makes us believe that he is our best friend(The "mocking mans best friend" line). The Lion is Sin because the "teeth are sharpened for war" line, indicates that it's been around forever and that it's killing plenty of things before, also noting that the lion is also referred to as "the king of the jungle" in most modern terms, meaning it isn't killed by any other animal. It's the greatest. And I think in this case, Satan's whispering in our heads to let Sin in (the wolf, symbolizing us giving in to temptation, opens the door) and beyond our knowledge, we've let in something that will destroy our lives, and after it's completely devoured your relationship with Christ, it leaves you empty, and then your own personal temptation (The Wolf) cleans up the rest, in other words, justifying your reason for letting the sin in. This is purely just what I think, it's definitely a multiple meaning song, Dustin is an extremely awesome lyricist and performer. Go Thrice. :) |
