I find this a very interesting piece of modern art to try to interpret, both the lyrics, the video, and the conjunction of both. There are clearly many levels of interpretation and different themes present; the one theme that strikes me is the idea of this song being about her fear of sex. No where in this song do I see the claims being made that she is addicted to sex, or is having shallow sex out of fun and not love. To me, this song is saying the opposite -- that she has no interest in love, is innocent like a child: "She's not broken, she's just a baby But her boyfriend's like her dad, just like a dad." and what she feels for men is not sexual, just as a daughter does not feel sexual thoughts towards their father -- or, the repulsion of sex, possibly being incapable of love and repulsed by your "dirty," "unholy" attraction to men (or women...?) just as you would be repulsed by an incestuous relationship, i.e. your father (the gender-f*cked-version of the oedipus complex?). If this were the case it would explain why she doesn't want their touch, or their kiss, this fear of sex, and actually being repulsed by sex in this way is actually a documented psychological condition. How she interweaves these concepts is remarkable, the video adds so much more dimension. How this relates to the homosexual individual I feel is explored only so far as to leave it up to individual interpretation, but the messages against homophobia in religion and modern culture as a whole (i.e. the millitary) are spot on and much needed. bravo to her! |

| this makes sense, i thought i knew what i was talking about even without that quote. Also thanks for the correction as to who sings that one line, it happens to be my favorite of the song (i shouldn't have assumed), but that it is rostam also makes sense then, lol. | |

Ezra is not gay, but Rostam admittedly is (Rolling Stone Feb. 4 2010), and, seeing as he collaborated on these lyrics I was under the impression that this entire song was from a homosexual viewpoint, considering all male vocals + singing about a son, w/ no mention of anything hinting at a female perspective(besides maybe the cha chaing in the beginning). Some of the lyrics seem to back this up also... "I know, you'll say I'm not doing it right but this is how I want it" (3:30) and the way Ezra pronounces this verse in particular is wonderfully flamboyant... I'm not sure if that was the intention of this song, but it makes me like it even more. |
