| The Hold Steady – Constructive Summer Lyrics

This was the song that got me into the Hold Steady. When I first heard it I thought it was some Husker Du song I'd never heard before. Because of this, I've always heard the first line as "Me and my friends are like/The drums all Husker-like". I know it's not what he's actually saying, but it works for me. |

| Will Oldham – Idea and Deed Lyrics

Well, first of all, this is an adaptation of a Scottish folk song, Both Sides the Tweed, written about the merging of Scotland and England into a single country.
In that vein, I've always thought the chorus of this song was about marriage and how people create new families out of old (Let the love of our own sacred rites/To the love of our people succeed).
The verses seem to be about being true to yourself and not giving in to materialism. I don't know how that meshes with the chorus, but it's a great song regardless. |

| Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – Church on White Lyrics

I read in some magazine when this album came out that this song was written by a friend of Malkmus' about another friend who had died, so that's probably the literal meaning. It works with the lyrics, which are definitely "half a life", not half a line or half alive. |

I always assumed the final bit was about taking the drug ecstasy, chewing on pacifiers or lolly pops and ending the night alone.
As for the name, you might as well go around trying to get people to call Inna Godda Davida "In the Garden of Eden". |

| The Olivia Tremor Control – Marking Time Lyrics

This is a very beautiful song. "Marking time" means marching in place and I've always loved how the rhythm and chord changes (or lack of them) really make the song sound like it's standing in place in that way.
As for the lyrics, the song seems to be about longing and vulnerability (I can't hide X 9). |

I was under the impression that one of the purposes of the Elephant 6 collective was specifically to recreate the tone and feel of 60's pop music. I don't see how pointing out obvious comparisons to the Beatles (or the Beach Boys, Byrds, etc.) is a big deal. |
