| Beirut – On A Bayonet Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| True, unadultered talent is seldom found in instrumental songs. But this is an exception. This is my favorite song from Beirut. I can't really say why I feel this way; I suppose it's because the melodious tune is so... real. It doesn't need elegant words or insincere ad-ons (which I'm confident less creative artists than Beirut would do) to portray the emotion that the song carries within itself. When I listen to it, I feel a rush of pure emotion. | |
| Beirut – Cherbourg Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| It seems to me that this song is an apology to a loved one; the beginning lyrics explicitly implies that he wants to be with someone (props to Zach for making a love song not mawkish and boring). Also, the end of the song seems to be something along the lines of a promise to do the right thing. Food for thought. | |
| Beirut – The Akara Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Although the instrumental portion of this song is marked with kind of a melancholy tone to it, I personally can't connect the dots with the lyrics. To me, they don't point to anything sinister or sad. If anything, they simply portray a very realistic dialogue. | |

This kind of melodious brilliance is seldom found in today's world of bad taste. It's comforting to know that Beirut is living up to their name in this new album. On a similar note, this song is absolutely beautiful- I especially love the "easy on the ears" trumpets in the background. It makes the song, I swear. |

| Beirut – Elephant Gun Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Every time I listen to this song, I can think only of a paradox in someone's head. I must be crazy myself, but when I listen closely and try to analyze what the song means, I can only think of random thoughts passing through one's mind. Also, I found it odd that in the beginning of the song, both Zach's voice and his lyrics were soft and contemplative. Shortly after the words "elephant gun," his tone shifts from deeply pensive to almost... irritated. It's almost as if another person was singing the latter half of the song. Food for thought. |

This is an absolutely brilliant song. They really captured that kind of "happiness" that I think they were going for. To me, the high point is found in the latter portion of the song. _________________________________ Now the sky could be blue I don't mind Without you it's a waste of time Now the sky could be blue Could be grey Without you I'm just miles away _________________________________ It's such a simple thing to say, but I find it very powerful; it makes me think of the ones that make even the bluest skies dull without them by my side. |

| The Decemberists – Shanty for the Arethusa Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This is a classic example of The Decemberists' brilliance; the kind of eloquence that you find in these kinds of songs is rare in light of today's ugly taste. I feel that the song's dark nature is probably what makes it so unforgettable. | |
| Devotchka – How It Ends Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| My interpretation of this song is that of hopelessness. At first, death came to mind; however, after reviewing the lyrics, I think that a sarcastic explaination religions (in general) is what Devotchka was going for... | |
