Count Zero – Radium Eyes Lyrics 14 years ago
Almost a year later, I would like to add...
Radium was discovered in 1898 - also the year of the Spanish-American War. I'd say that's probably no coincidence. ;P
So maybe this song isn't necessarily about the man and woman as much as it is about WAR itself - that war in particular.

The Mighty Boosh – Howard's Freak Song Lyrics 15 years ago
This is my favorite song from The Mighty Boosh, simply because it's so beautiful. ;P At the same time, it has a subtle humor about it that can be hard to catch if you're not familiar with the show.

Count Zero – Radium Eyes Lyrics 15 years ago
I have a theory that could be completely wrong. =P
I think this song is about a man in a war who loves a woman with blue eyes.

It mentions this man wearing "lead pants" and being in a Marginot... Then there's the line "wondering when he'll touch flesh again," suggesting there's a chance he'll be there for a long time. A lot of soldiers and whatnot often wonder when they'll be coming home too, I'd say.

The section mentioning a maid sounds like he's daydreaming. Whether or not if this used to be his actual life - his beautiful girl, a poolparty, and even a maid - is unknown, as it sounds too perfect.

Near the end, it says she's changing bedpans in cities where none but daughters roam. In other words, maybe she (the girl with radium eyes) is a nurse... Which would really make sense is there is a war going on, because a lot of the men would be GONE - it'd be mostly females in the city, and there would be a lot of wounded soldiers. This also explains the line about stretchers filling cathedrals; there are so many wounded that they have to place them in churches and such, too.

So through all of this horror... This man is thinking about one thing: he wants to tell this beautiful girl that she has radium eyes.

Feel free to add to or correct anything I've written! I'm really interested in hearing what other people think about this interpretation, and if anyone has any other ideas!

The Strokes – On The Other Side Lyrics 15 years ago
When I first listened to this song, I really hated it.
I listened to it a few more times, and I still hated it.
I think it was just the chorus that really got to me - too sappy, too draggy, and just annoying... Like a really bad country song, you know?
But I really like everything else about the song. It definitely isn't a bad song, and it has an interesting meaning.

I like the interpretations the users before me have mentioned. =P

Toadies – Away Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with PJ10.
I feel like this song is possibly cynical, just from the way it sounds. If you only read the words, it seems like a pretty normal religious song with the singer being happy that there is a Heaven and whatnot... but it doesn't seem that way in the song itself.

I thought the idea that the song is narrated by God is pretty cool. [: And it would explain the verse about hunting and "come right on in," which I'm finding a hard time explaining otherwise... Unless he's turned into a zombie or something. ;P

"To be in the shade,
The oldest trees above my head."
I think this part's pretty cool, because at first you can think that he's in the shade of the trees, with the leaves high above his head... but then the LITERAL interpretation is supposed to kick in when he mentions Heaven - the trees are seriously above him. In other words, he's dead in the ground.

It's a nifty song, and definitely showing religion in some respect.

The Strokes – Is This It Lyrics 15 years ago
"Can't you see I'm trying
I don't even like it. I just lied to
Get to your apartment, now I'm staying
Here just for a while."

This very first section... When she says he doesn't even like it, is this referring to the sex? I'm just wondering, because that sounds really odd to me, yet it fits because... well, if it's meaningless sex to a degree, then maybe he's too busy thinking about having an actual relationship and can't find himself to enjoy the sex when there's nothing more behind it. Is it all for her?

A Perfect Circle – The Nurse Who Loved Me (Failure cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
I think ObsessiveTendencies is right about this song's meaning, so I won't go off explaining the meaning if it's already been said. (:

It just doesn't sound a song about drug addiction to me. Yes, it mentions drugs ("pharmacy keys"), but it does not focus on it. The metaphors that would imply the song is about drugs do not carry out... So I will never think of this song as something specifically targeting addiction - even if Failure themselves outright said so. Which, by the way, I haven't heard anything about. ;P

I actually like this version more than the original song by Failure. (I like their version, too! [: But APC's feels "pretty.") It's beautiful, and feels like a dream. You can actually imagine him daydreaming about this nurse who takes care of him, and all of the perks that come along with having her. The song feels like maybe, just maybe he's in love. Whether it's just him being drugged up or if it's his own insanity, I doubt we'll know for sure, though.

I loved the interpretation about it being rape! I think that's a really interesting way to think about it. Absolutely brilliant.

There's no better word to describe it than "cute," in my opinion.

Another catchy religious song, courtesy of The Violent Femmes. =P

Violent Femmes – Jesus Walking on the Water Lyrics 15 years ago
Every time I hear this song, I can't help but to crack up. The MOMENT I hear it... That "Oh myy, oh myy, ooohhh my!" is just too damned funny. [: Especially right after "Never Tell"!

I have to agree with YourEuphoria, though... It is a very catchy song, despite its very, uhm... Southern-Religious sound - the type of music I always shy away from.

I would also like to add another thought as a possibility for this song.

I never addressed why he'd suddenly say "Yes, there's going to be drowning." After all, that really contradicts everything I said previously - since I basically said this song is about getting rid of all the lies he's saying or been told.

I think that part ("Yes, there's going to be a drowning...") in particular is when you can tell he's breaking down. He seems even more sluggish... more tired, really.

The next part ("half wasted, face painted, hold my hand") is much louder and sounds a lot more desperate... and I tentatively want to say the part about holding his hand could essentially mean, "Give me the strength to break through all of these lies."

... at which point, it sounds like he's "emerging" from water/lies - no longer drowning in lies. (:

I hope somebody else comments on this song! I really want to know if anybody else thinks the same things as me, or if I'm just blowing steam. ;P

He's a fool... and he likes to drool. (;

All kidding aside though, I really enjoy the very last part. It sounds rather nifty.
Supernova has a way of making such silly music sound quite pleasant!

-Sorry in advance if this comment is a bit long!-

I think the drowning is metaphorical. [:

I really like how he's asking "Should you be alone?" and the next section is as if he is answering himself with a "Yes"... and quickly goes on with "There's going to be a drowning." Is he talking about someone else? ... Or maybe even himself?

While I do not think this to be a literal drowning, I am unsure of what the other meaning would be. Drowning in tears/sorrow? Drowning in lies? In truth? Is this strictly an internal conflict?

Wil6's idea makes sense. A painted face could be a facade, and the lines about understanding can fit in with this.

At the beginning of the song he sings "I come to. There will be no more drowning." This is his first decision that the "drowning" will stop. Why am I mentioning this? Well, if this song is about lies... This is his decision that he will see THROUGH the lies told to him, or that he will stop LYING to himself. In other words, there will be no more "drowning" in lies.

I also love how at the last verse ("There will be no more") it feels like he's emerging from water. The entire piece is incredibly heavy (granted, he gradually sounds more desperate) until that final breaking point, when you can imagine him tearing down a metaphorical wall.

Foreigner – Blinded By Science Lyrics 16 years ago
To be honest, this always sounded like a religious song to me. I mean, obviously the "I'm not an appliance" bit is a little less religious-sounding, but... ;P Things like:
"I can't believe we're here for no reason
There must be something we can believe in."
... this shows a hint of religious connotations.
I think Inverted-Shadow very well could be right, though. =P
