Elite Gymnastics – Omamori Lyrics 12 years ago
INCREDIBLE song

but I think it's
"once free, a beautiful king"

"You bought some cigarettes
Because you're ignorant of death"
"Even death will be impressed"

and

"Once fierce, now silent and still"

little things but they affect the meaning

School of Seven Bells – Connjur Lyrics 13 years ago
The great thing about School of Seven Bells is that their lyrics are always sort of hard to hear and so the song just sounds beautiful and isn't shoving any themes down your throat, but when you look them up, you realize that they're actually really meaningful and carefully planned. I like how especially the last verse seems to reference the Biblical creation through words: "in the beginning was the word" or whatever. This whole song is like a beautiful dream.

She & Him – Brand New Shoes Lyrics 13 years ago
I think She & Him's summery, feel-good sound often distracts from the darker underside to Zooey's lyrics. (Example: In The Sun--> "we all feel ashamed, sometimes every day") Brand New Shoes, to me, doesn't seem like it's about heartbreak or a relationship but the general idea that one realizes more and more as one gets older that even when we get them, our desires don't give the fulfillment we hope they will. It seems like Zooey might be talking about fame and success, something she may have dreamt about as a little girl. Now, having attained it, she realizes that it's "nothing at all." It's a bleak statement but it's delivered with such honesty that it really adds to my respect for Zooey as a songwriter. The simple guitar part and the verse lyrics ("We are all made of air, there's stars in my eyes and there's sun in my hair") also strike me as extremely powerful.

Grizzly Bear – Marla Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, it seems like this song is narrated from the perspective of the ghost of a servant who continually wanders around this abandoned (or maybe not?) house looking for the objects described in the song despite the fact that decades or even centuries have passed and his master and all his possessions have long since gone. But still, he can't stop his search.

Judging from the previous comments, this may not be what Grizzly Bear intended but it's how the song strikes me. It's truly haunting. (And yes, Adscititious! The lyrics, especially "I've looked in the greenhouses one, two and three" remind me somehow of Dr. Seus)
