I feel like this song is about a girl who falls in love with a guy but then quickly realizes 1.) that the guy is uninterested in her and 2.) he's not the person she thought he was. She sees the potential in him, but he's ultimately uninterested and she "gives up the ghost", and tries to forget. |

I love this song so much. It always gets to me. The funny thing is.... I'm a 23-year-old gay man >_< I don't know, it's just relieving to hear someone say "Sometimes I'm lazy" and "I choke on my own words". It just lets you know you're not alone and it's OK to give yourself a break when you need one. Plus, her voice is so powerful. I feel like we're all "ordinary girls" and "anything can happen in this world" for us. Believe it. |

Is it just me or do all the songs on Hotel Paper inspire you to just drive away? These songs are perfect road trip songs. Love it, especially this song. |

I feel like this song was written by Michelle about her and her daughter driving in their car through the American Southwest. It's really quite beautiful and simple. |

This song is definitely about the ugliness we all have inside of us. In this song, Utada recognizes her own ugliness, asks if her lover is ready to face that, then points out his own ugliness. This song to me captures that critical moment of love when we ask ourselves "Wait, why does this person love me? Why do I love them? Do I really know them?" Definitely my favorite song of hers. Just so rich and the meaning will always stay. |

| Wicked – Defying Gravity Lyrics

Well, to me, my favorite parts of the song are the parts everyone always looks over. Whenever this song is mentioned, only Elphaba's part of "Defying Gravity" is mentioned, while the parts which I believe to be the most powerful are never mentioned. My two favorite parts in this song are:
"Unlimited, together we're unlimited". When this is sung, it just solidifies in your mind the friendship these two have. This part justifies the rest of the song because it highlights how hard of a decision it is for Elphaba to throw away any chance of a continuing relationship with Glinda.
"I hope you're happy now that you're choosing this. I hope it brings you bliss. I really hope you get it and you don't live to regret it. I hope you're happy in the end. I hope you're happy my friend." These lines are the summation of the message of the entire musical, in my opinion. First, let me comment on the clever juxtaposition between the first "I hope you're happy now" and this one. The first was an angry sarcasm, but this instance is sincere for both of them. These lines highlight how the two are splitting and making not 100% perfect decisions: Elphaba running away and resisting instead of calmly changing things and Glinda passively staying without standing up for what is truly good. Each person realizes that there is something wrong with either's decision, so each hopes that they know what they're getting into and "don't live to regret it". So beautiful. It makes their parting that much sadder.
Again, I could take or leave the main part of the song. It isn't as powerful to me as those other lines. |

| Wicked – No One Mourns the Wicked Lyrics

I'd disagree. Glinda loved her friend till the end. She is not able to express her true feelings to the public or she'll be chased after by the citizens of Oz as well.
The song (and the whole musical in general) are about challenging the notions of what really is wicked and what is good, so "the wicked" and "goodness" are the two opposing forces. It's a nice juxtaposition of Elphaba as an innocent baby and her "wicked" counterpart. It just shows that when the Ozians denounce Elphaba as "wicked, they strip her of her humanity. Glinda secretly tries to convince them that it wasn't her fault, and that you should still pity someone who has fallen for we are all human after all.
It's so beautiful, really. |
