Radiohead – The Present Tense Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this is a break-up song. He is refusing to let it get ugly. He wants to stay positive, keep dancing. If he doesn't, than "all this love will be in vain." I take that to mean they could become bitter and hate each other, like couples that break up often do.
I like that "In you I'm lost" could have two meanings. At first, it could have meant "lost in love." Later, when breaking up, it could mean "In you I'm lost" as in "I can't be myself when I'm with you."

Elliott Smith – King's Crossing Lyrics 10 years ago
King's Crossing is a neighborhood in Portland. I like what recidivist says about how it's used in the song. He had gotten famous but still fell back into addiction. What I get from the song is that he's saying it was inevitable that he would go back to using and eventually kill himself.

M. Ward – Here Comes The Sun Again Lyrics 10 years ago
There is a Sandy River that runs along the road to Mt Hood. In Oregon there are long stretches of rainy days so when the sun finally comes out you really appreciate it.

Radiohead – Videotape Lyrics 10 years ago
I think that he's being a little sarcastic and taking a swipe at people who try to read too much into his lyrics. He's saying people think that they know him from the lyrics that he's written. If he dies, people will try to find some meaning from these words. The truth is, he's a person. You might glean something about him from what he's written but you'll never really know him.

Eagles – Hotel California Lyrics 11 years ago
I was just watching the Eagles documentary, which is great. This is definitely a song that was meant to be open to interpretation and not one specific thing. I hear it as someone in the 70s thinking about how much things have changed since the 60s. I think the line, "We haven't had that spirit here since 1969," started me thinking. Essentially he's saying everything changed after that but part of the spirit of the 60s will always live on. So in that context, the "masters" had mirrors on the ceiling and pink champagne on ice, and tried to kill the spirit of the 60s but "just can't kill the beast." The 60s made people more socially and politically aware. At the end when he says, "You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave, " he's saying you can ignore what's going on but it will still catch up to you. Even though rock stars like the Eagles became millionaires with limousines, groupies, and coke habits, the music and culture of the 60s still influences them.

The Shins – Phantom Limb Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is about how teenagers just want to get out of whatever town they grew up in. They are sure that there is something better for them out there somewhere. Their hometown is the place where the singer first discovered girls, booze, and rock music, but he still feels no connection to it because he is sure that something bigger is waiting out there.
I especially like the line, "So when they tap our Sunday heads/to zombie-walk in our stead." He's saying when they graduate and move on another generation will come and do the same things they did.

R.E.M. – Driver 8 Lyrics 15 years ago
It is a great song that can be taken at surface value and enjoyed just for the music and the imagery.
I think that there are also some references to intolerance in southern culture. The narrator describes a gradual process, walls built stone by stone, but he is frustrated by how long it is taking to erase the backwards attitudes. The conductor is telling him to take a break - we will reach our destination but it's still a ways away.
I think that there are also some references to a very narrow-minded religious viewpoint. The children only hear sky-blue bells ringing. They are taught a very strict point-of-view by the church and that is all that they know. In contrast, the narrator is trying to shield his children from the "hated heat".
Or it could just be a song about trains. I don't think that either way of listening to it is wrong.
