The Strokes – 12:51 Lyrics 16 years ago
I have a great memory that goes perfectly along with this song..
I literally went through the story-like lyrics. I was on the phone with this girl that I kind of liked,
and we always kind of hinted at doing stuff with eachother. THen one FRIDAY night, she called me while I was
getting ready for a party, and I literally stopped putting on my tie and cologne, and was like "yeah, let's just have some drinks
to the two of us."

The sense of meloncholy that you hear in the song is the sense of guilt mixed with the desire-driven excitement you have...

I felt the EXACT feeling that Jules describes in this... He parents were out of town... i hung up the phone, and looked at my
alarm clock to see the red glow of 12:51 in the digital lettering.

At that moment, I understood what was so magical about that certain time. 12:51 on a digital clock is a mirror image.
If you would put a mirror where the colon is between the numbers, you would have a perfect reflection of the 12:51.

well put... I live in New York for most of my life and I've seen it change too..
It used to be waaaay more united, and people would talk to eachother much more..

anyway, there's also the "love" undertone to this song as well, I think..
Maybe not... I guess it really depends on how you interpret the "Ego" lines.

I really like this song, despite its depressing qualities..

It's interesting how he start off the song with a swinging 8th-note feeling, and then comes in with standard 8th note
hip-hop high hat. It's a very cool contrast.. never heard it before..

I'm guessing this song is about how when he is away from, or broken up with ,his lover, he's completely lost and
doesn't find the sense of comfort anywhere he may be..

Well written...

Oh, and be careful of the gain-guitar solo... it can really get stuck in your head and will haunt you haaha
I've been suffering from it for a while
Go Julian!

Hmm.. this song take some thinking..
it seems like there's two different world colliding in this song.

First is the world of consumerism and the irresponsibility of the usage of our resources.

Second is the world of despair, guilt and the loss of hope.

People who live in large scale cities really come to appreciate this sort of song for it sort of lays out how intense it can
be to live in one.

I live in Manhattan, and I can really appreciate the feeling of the sounds Julian has created, and it make the world feel a bit as though it's going a little out of control, and we justify our reckless actions with "I shop, therefore, I am the cause."

A bold song, definitely worth some time to listen and think about.

Not to be a dick or anything but I think the last this song has to do with is the Environment... I mean, come on,
Julian's a bit smarter than that... and River of Brake Lights already covers the whole "Green Peace" aspect.

My angle on this song is that Julian is a bit sick of our culture... "Watching the mother/daughter clones go by"
is sort of a way of viewing how our culture is stuck in a cycle of desire and mimesis...

He does a great job of putting it into musical context because it's a very complicated subject. We're constantly screwing ourselves over with desire, and pop culture idolization.

We're kind of leading our culture into a state of idiocracy. He's kind of scared about how fast it's going, and how quickly we're wasting so much of our precious time.

WAKE UP! wake up WAKE UP wake up wake UUUUUUP!

Does that make sense? I could be wrong...
